Aplin] Elderly Target Of Social Services For Food Stamp Usage Elderly persons often must sur vive on a small pension they receive monthly and in many cases food is among one of the first items cut back to save money. This is the reason that older residents of Hoke County have been targeted for special attention in the Food Stamp Program, according to Ben Niblock, director, and Delores Leggett, outreach coordinator for food stamps. "We think there are many elderly persons in our county who either do not know they qualify for food stamps or won't apply for them because they think they will be looked down on if they do", Niblock explained. "We want to reach these people. Most folks on fixed incomes with few additional resources would qualify for food stamps." "What we would like to em phasize," Niblock and Leggett said, "is that participation in this program is no different from receiving other benefits designed for and richly deserved by the elderly such as Social Security, Supplemental Security Insurance, tax breaks, etc. The Food Stamp Program is not a total welfare program because more the 99 percent of the participants actually pay part of the cost of the stamps. There should be no stigma associ ated with the use of the stamps and no hesitation to apply." The program is used to stretch the food dollar to insure good nutrition. Most of the elderly on fixed incomes really need the extra food the program can provide to stay healthy. "Nutrition is a recognized pro blem of the elderly." says Nathan Yelton. assistant Secretary for the Division on Aging under the De partment of Human Resources. "I am extnjjnely distressed at the low rate of participation of those on fixed incomes who use food stamps. Elderly people can realize a tre mendous benefit from this program both by improving their budgets and their health." He continued that the Division on Aging would encourage food stamp usage through various private and gov ernment agencies that serve older adults. John Kerr, head of the Food Stamp Program in North Carolina, plans to promote participation of the elderly statewide. "Hunger is the most degrading among all of the adversities the low income elderly suffers." he said. "It would seem to demonstrate a shameful inability of our culture to satisfy this most fundamental hu man necessity and implies society's neglect of the elderly. County departments of social services across the state are making a special effort to reach out and offer this benefit to our senior citizens." State Patrol Reports Safe Holiday The Highway Patrol reported no fatalities or serious injuries in the county over the four-day Memorial Day holiday but one driver was arrested on multiple counts follow ing a high-speed chase Saturday evening. Trooper K.W. Weston reported that Kelvin E. Jones, 21, of Rt. 1, Box 146-C, Raeford, was charged with speeding 100 m.p.h., drunken driving, careless and reckless driv ing, eluding an officer and failure to stop for blue light and siren about 8 p.m. on U.S. 401 in Bowmore. He was released under $400 bond pending a June 30 appearance. According to Weston, Jones was operating a 1973 Pontiac and attempting to outrun a sheriff s department cruiser with Capt. J.R. Riley and C.R. Wilson in pursuit. The car went out of control when it attempted to turn left onto RPR 1 124, skidded off the highway and struck a parked car and a signpost. A passenger in the Pontiac, James T. Ross, 18. of Rt. 1. Box 162, Raeford, suffered a leg injury and was taken to Scotland Memor ial Hospital in Laurinburg, Weston said. A Maryland man was arrested about 9:30 Saturday night follow ing a two-car crash on U.S. 401 near RPR 1303. According to Weston, a car being operated by Larry D. McCollum, 25. of Balti more. pulled out from a driveway onto the highway in the path of a vehicle being operated by James E. Robinson, 43. of 508 Grant St.. Raeford. A passenger in the McCollum car. Conly Maynor, 49. also of Baltimore, suffered a hip injury and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. McCollum was charged with drunken driving and unsafe move ment and was released on bond pending a June 20 appearand. HOKE COUNTY RESCUE SQUAD, INC. They're Trained and Equipped To Serve You.
