Outstanding School Athletes Receive Awards At Banquet A number of outstanding high school athletes were honored last week at the annual Hoke High Athletic Awards Banquet. In football, Earnie Pecora re ceived the Outstanding Lineman Award and Vernon Morrison re ceived the Outstanding Back Award. Coach's Awards went to Joe Poole and Anthony Cook. In boys basketball, Marcus Brown received the Most Valuable Player Award and the Coach's Award went to Allen Black. In girls basketball, Lena Scriven was the recipient of the Top Scorer Award. Terri Tyler received the Top Rebounder Award. In wrestling, Ricky Singletary was given the Most Valuable Award and Mike McNeill received the Jeff Upchurch Memorial Tro phy. Softball In last week's softball action Tuesday's games were changed to Friday due to inclement weather. In the first game Pig-'N-Chicken ripped Rose Aviation 18-7 in five innings. Harrison Daniels, Gary Mauney and James McQueen each went 3-4 to pace P-C's 17 hit attack. Mauney and Bobby Baker each slammed two home runs. Earl Carthens had two hits in three times at bat to pace Rose's. The varisty cheerleader Cap tain's Award was given to Mary Griffin. Results with two home runs to pace the unbeaten All-Stars. Allen Thomas went 2-2 to pace the losers. Carolina Turf is now 3-3. The walk will get underway at 9 a. m. Participants are signing up pledges per mile and the pledge will be multiplied bv the number of miles completed. The Recreation Commission will certify the number of miles and each walker will collect his pledges. Checks should be made payable to Hoke County Parks and Recreation. BI Bowling Summer Action On By Blanche Fanner The summer mixed bowling league had its ups and downs in Thursday night action at Lafayette Lanes. The New Commers upset the Hot Liners four games to nothing, the Rolling Stones beat the Kinfolks three games to one, Ch-6 spoiled the night for Pedro's Gang, 3-1, the Groovy Four outclassed the Brady Bunch four games to nothing, Harry's Goodies lost to the Odd Balls 3-1 and Hard Times beat the Spare Makers four games to noth ing. Hitting the 200 mark were Zan Kelly (206), Earl Waldron (204), Don Matthew (200), and Ernie Cabato had a 616 series with a 268 game. Howard 145 Ladies ' League Hunt B; Pat Scott The ladies softball season got underway Wednesday, May 25, with Hunt's Truckers (The former Jaycees) continuing their winning ways with a 19-16 decision over Hollingsworth's Barber Shop. There was plenty of scoring, homeruns, and errors. T. Tyler led Hunt's Truckers with a 3-4 at bat performance, including a three-run homer! S. Campbell hit a two-run homer to aid her team's effort while G. Murchison and one solo homer and a two-run homer for the Truckers. G. McArthur came in the game in the bottom of the second inning to spur HBS with a 2-3 effort at bat. R. McCall hit a two-run homer for a 2-4 performance. HBS was hitting the ball but their effort wasn't enough to overcome costly errors plus the hitting of the Hunt's Truckers. In the second game of the evening Rosa's Grill took a decisive American Legion Team Launches Season The Raeford Post 20, American Legion, baseball team bqgan sea son play Wednesday against Hope Mills. This is the first time in almost 30 years that the post has sponsored a team in competition. Post Com mander Lawrence Bounds said. Season tickets for the seven home games are now on sale from Post members, coaches and players for SS. Bounds noted that home games scheduled at night will be played at Red Springs. Sunday afternoon games will be played in Raeford. Post members will also be selling tickets for SI each for a motorized bicycle to be given away June 26. Proceeds will go to support the Post 20 baseball team. Eighteen boys have been selected for the team, but Bounds indicated that some players will be dropped and others added as tryouts continue. Six of the team members are students from Seventy-First High School and two are from Red Springs. The Hoke County players select ed for the team include David Earl Blue. Kenny Carpenter. Bruce Carroll. Sam Harris. David Home, David McNeill, Dick McNeill, Mike Tuttle, Mark Wood and Perry Worley. Team coaches and Terry Grier and Mike Lassiter. William Poole is Post Athletic Officer. Bounds emphasized that team membership is not limited to families of Post 20 members so he is looking for good community-wide support for the team. Riggins led Rosa's Grill with a 2-2 effort with a solo homer but was removed after two innings of Roll play to add defensive strength tor the team. L. Kershaw was 3-5 with three home runs. Kershaw hit a solo homer in the first inning, a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and a two-run homer in the fifth. Rosa's Grill was smacking the ball but all teams need to work on defense.
