Recreation Bits
The tennis tournament k well underway. Of course the rains
have slowed die competition down, bat numerous results have
been reported. In the men's singles ages 25 and below, Barry
Sumner defeated Mac McNeill and Larry Beasfey defeated Kurt
Ernest. In man's singles ages 26 and up, Les Simpson topped
Steve McNeill. In men's doubles Mac McNeill and David
Richards won over Gene Carter and Hank Richards and Larry
Beasley and Glenn Miller defeated Les Simpson and Bob
Drumwright. In the mixed doubles Dianna Nash and Glenn
Miller won over Anne and Charlie Hostetler. Also in mixed
doubles Chester and Lawanna Hayes topped Gail and Ricky
English. In die women's doubles Joy Upchurch and Mary James
defeated Betty Morgan and Barbara Slaughter.
Tennis Lessons
The Commission will be sponsoring instructional tennis lessons
for all abilities. Classes are set to begin June 20 at the Hoke High
Courts. There will be three classes each morning Monday-Friday
and two classes each Saturday morning. There will also be a 10-15
person limit per class, so registration will be on a first come, first
serve basis. Ability levels will be grouped together, thus exact
time schedules will depend on the number who register and on
their abilities. Interested folks should call the recreation office
and register today.
Volleyball Change
A change has been made in the co-ed volleyball schedule.
Ladies free play will be Tuesday nights. Ages 15-17 will compete
on Wednesday nights.
Ages 18 and up will still play on Monday nights.
An organizational meeting for all teams will be held Monday,
June 13 In the Gibson gymnasium. Rules and regulations will be
discussed at that time.

Kindergarten Puts On Show
Kindergarteners from J.W. Mc
Lauchlin School entertained par
ents, teachers and other students
with an end of the year program
Tuesday morning.
The children, students of Mrs.
G.A. Wright, sang, counted to 100,
recited rhymes and the alphabet,
and danced for the crowd gathered
outside in the sun.
Mrs. A.M. McKinnon was nar
rator of the program.
As part of the finale the girls
formed a group to dance the Bunny
Hop and circle the Maypole. The
boys donned feathers and perform
ed the Indian Dance. The boys also
did a march while wearing soldier's
hats.
The final act brought the chil
dren back together for a Soul Train
number.

American Legion Post 20 scored
in the eleventh inning to snap a tie
and post a 7-6 victory last week over
Hope Mills Post 32.
Coach Terry Grier's players
scored their seven runs on 10 hits
and two errors while Hope Mills
collected their six runs on six hits
and one error.

The District 10 Director of the
Parent - Teachers Association will
attend the Hoke County P.T.A.
meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
June 7, in the conference room of
the Hoke County Board of Educa
tion at 7:30 p.m.
Mrs. Alexander J. Rahal was
elected to fill an unexpired term in
District 10 and took over the
direction of 69 local units, two
councils and a total membership of
10.183.
As director she has attended the
State District Directors Workshop!
State Legislation Conference,
Leadership Training Conferences,
the Annual PTA Convention as well
as meetings of the Board of
Managers.
Mrs. Rahal received the 1976
District Directors Award and won
the President's Trophy at Con
vention.

Collum has extended an invitation
to all Hoke County parents to
attend the meeting and participate
in the election of officers tor next
year.

Blue pitched the final innings of
the game, striking out seven batters
and allowing only one hit.
Leading Post 20 was catcher
David Home, who was 3-4 at the
plate and had a double, and
Warren Bernard and Sam Harris,
who were 2-4 and 2-5 in appear
ances. respectively.
Hope Mills was led by Zake
Lorick and Butch Gillis who both
went 2-6 at bat.
Greg Briley, a sophomore at
Seventy-First High School, was
credited with two super plays in the
last inning to stop a Hope Mills
rally at the plate.
The winning run was brought in
on a walk.

this Friday night to meet Pinecrest.

Ruth Locklear, an eighth grader
at Upchurch School, brought home
