New Transportation Board
Members Sworn In
Secretary of Transportation
4 Thomas W. Bradshaw, Jr. chaired
the first meeting of the newly
restructured North Carolina Board
of Transportation July 28.
The meeting was held in the
highway Building in Raleigh and
was convened only hours after a
10:30 a.m. swearing in ceremony
for the new Board members at the
State Capitol.
Members of the new Board,
restructured by the last General
Assembly, are: T.G. (Sonny Boy)

Thomas of Vanceboro; Garland B.
Garrett, Jr. of Wilmington;
William C. Herring of Wilson; Iley

Funeral services for Dewey Edsel
Suggs Jr., 44, were conducted
Sunday at 5 p.m. in Old Zion
Wesley an Church in Tabor City
?, with the Rev. Ward Gentry officiat
ing. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Suggs died last Friday.
Surviving are his wife. Mrs.
Darlene L. Suggs; five daughters,
Mrs. Theresa Home of Conway,
S.C., Mrs. Mercedes Hardee and
Mrs. Karen Fowler, both of Tabor
City, and Misses Evonna and Linda
Faye Suggs, both of the home; two
stepsons. Dona Ray and Alton
Locklear, both of the home; a
stepdaughter, Sharon Ann Lock
lear of the home; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Dewey Suggs of Tabor
City; and two sisters. Mrs. Penny
McNeill of Lumberton and Mrs.
Barbour Fowler of Puerto Rico.
Mrs. CaJUe Pendergrass
Funeral services for Mrs. Callie
Pendergrass. 77, were conducted
Friday at 4 p.m. from the Raeford
Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
j John Ropp officiating. Burial was
in the Raeford Cemetery.
Mrs. Pendergrass died July 27.
Surviving are two brothers, John
of Archdale and Fairley Hardison
' of Raeford; and two sisters, Mrs.
Lester King of Burlington and Mrs.
Lila McLean of Spring Lake.
E. Bryant of Brevard; Jeanette
David Carl of Fayetteville; George
G. Harper of Kinston; Dr. Moses
Alexander Ray of Tarboro;
Representative David W. Bum
gardner. Jr. of Belmont; Senator
James B. Garrison of Albemarle;

Charlotte.
All. but two, are Governor James
B. Hunt, Jr.'s appointees. Senator
Garrison was named to the
transportation policy group by the
lieutenent governor, while Rep
resentative Bumgardner was ap
pointed to the Board by the
Speaker of the House. One more
Governor Hunt appointee is yet to
be named. Eventually, the full
Board will have 24 members, with
Secretary Bradshaw serving as
ex-officio member and the Board's
chairman.
As one of its first actions, the
Board approved this afternoon for
contract award 42 separate high
way construction projects, totaling
more than $35 million.

Raeford Man Named
Fund Coordinator
Jeffrey P. McNeill
JetTry P. McNeill of Raeford. has
been named field representative for
the Ciemson University Alumni
Association.
He will be responsible for
coordinating the efforts of some
500 volunteers who solicit con
tributions to the annual Alumni
Loyalty Fund, which supports
Ciemson education programs.
McNeill is a 1974 graduate of
Gardner - Webb College, where he
was president of the student body.
He also received a master's degree
from Ciemson this year.
He was formerly an assistant to
the executive director of Four
I County Community Services, Inc..
Laurinburg. where he monitored
assistance programs funded by
three federal agencies.
McNeill is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. John K. McNeill Jr. of 514

RAINFALL ? July rainfall totaled only a scant 3.1 inches in Raeford as
seen hy the daily record chart. In July of last year the total measured 4.2
inches and in 1975 it h as 11.5 inches.
Johnson
? Leaving
Coach's Job
Rodney Johnson, the Hoke High
head basketball coach, has
resigned to accept a coaching job in
his native Asheville, it was
announced last week by Principal
Earl Oxendine.
Johnson. 27. came to the Hoke
High post in 1976 after two years as
junior varsity coach at Asheville
High School. He was chosen to
become the varsity coach at
Asheville High School.
Orlando "Tubby" Smith was
named by officials Friday to replace
Johnson.
Smith. 26. is a graduate of High
Point College.

John Pecora both expressed regret
at losing Johnson.
"We're very sorry to lose such an
Outstanding young man," the
principal said. "But we understand
this opportunity to return to his
home is important to him. We wish
him the very best and are grateful
for all the fine work he did while at
