In District Court Man Pleads No Contest To Affray ? A local man was sentenced in District Court Friday on a charge of deadly weapon affray that resulted in a death. ? Wayne Thomas, 507 North Saunders Street, Raeford, pleaded no contest to the charge. The incident resulted in the death of Laverne Freeman. Judge Joseph Dupree sentenced Thomas to not more than 24 months, suspended the sentence for five years, and placed him on probation for three and a half years. He was ordered not to carry a deadly weapon for five years and to pay S300 to be applied to the funeral expenses of Laverne Freeman and court costs. Charles H. Livingston, P.O. Box 523, Raeford, was placed on pro bation for two years on a charge of misdemeanor possesion of hashish. Entry of a verdict of guilty was withheld and he was ordered to pay court costs of S27. Roosevelt McPherson, Rt. 3, Box 263, Raeford, was found not guilty of non-support. Marvin Woods, Lot 4, N. Rae ford MHP, Rt. 3, Raeford, pleaded guilty to trespass. Prayer for judg ment was continued for three years provided the defendant docs not go upon the property of or molest the prosecuting witness for a period of three years. Alton Carthens, Red Springs, pleaded not guilty to a charge of trespass. He was found not guilty. Harold Gene Brooks, Shannon, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor breaking and entering and larceny. On the first count he was commit ted to the custody of the Commis sioner of Correction as a "commit ted youth offender" for a term of not more than 24 months. On the second count, he received the same judgment to begin at the expiration of the first sentence. He was ordered to pay restitution of S150, a fine of 510, and costs. Fred Jacobs, Rt. 1, Box 128, Lumber Bridge, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor larceny. He received a sentence of two years. The defendant appealed. Larry Wayne Brooks, Shannon, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor larceny. He was sentenced to two years, suspended for five years. He was placed on probation with the following conditions: that he not be convicted of shoplifting, larceny, fraud, embezzlement, or worthless checks, and that he pay restitution of $50, fine of 5100, and costs. Linwood Collins, Shannon. City Youth Named ' Morehead Nominee Robert (Rob) B. McNeill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Burns McNeill of Raeford, is one of two Robeson Country Day School nominees for the John Motley Morehead Award. Created in 1945, the Morehead Awards are made each year for undergraduate study at the Uni versity of North Carolina. The awards are honorary ones which are accompanied by a grant of money to finance recipient's studies. Awards are made on the basis of moral character, leadership, scho lastic ability, extracurricular at tainments and physical vigor. McNeill is president of the Beta Club and is presently serving on the school's student activity committee for accreditation. His school activities have included the Science Club. Spanish Club, newspaper * staff and annual start. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Colleges and High Schools" and ? "The Society of Distinguished American High School Students". Last year he attended the Gov Rob McNeill ernor s Hijjh School and served as a marshal for graduation. His athletic pursuits have included being a member of the school s basketball, soccer and baseball teams. Hoke Man Elected Co-op Board President Elias Rogers of Hoke County was elected president of the Lumbee River Electric Membership Co operative board of directors at the Oct. 18 meeting. Rogers, who has served 10 years on the board, was elected a vice-president in 1975. He joined the electric cooperative movement in I9t>7, becoming the first Indian elected to the board. He is presently serving as a director on the N.C. Electric Membership Cooperative State Board of Directors. He re ceived a sentence of not more than 12 months, suspended and was placed on probation for two years. He was ordered to pay restitution of $25 and costs. Raymond Lomax, Box 531, Rae ford, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault. He received a prayer for judgment continued for three years and paid costs. Garcia Rodriquez, Red Springs, pleaded guilty to engaging in an affray. He received a sentence of 30 days suspended for three years provided he not trespass on the property of Josepy Ray, including Larry's Food Mart, and that he not molest Joseph Ray for three years. He paid $23 fine and costs. Raymond Kina, P.O. Box 249, Raeford, pleaded guilty to assault. He received prayer for judgment continued for three years and was fined $10 and costs. Myron McPhatter, Rt. 1, Rae ford, pleaded no contest to a charge of injury to personal property. He received a sentence of seven months. James Harris Cross, Rt. 4, Box 37, Raeford, pleaded guilty to the offense of worthless check and two counts of violation of the prohibi tion law. He was sentenced to six months. Edward T. Thompson, Elgin, S.C., pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. A charge of speeding 66 in a 55 m.p.h. zone was dismissed. He was sentenced to 90 days, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to surrender his license upon his arrival at home. He was fined $150 and costs. James Robert Hudson, Oakwood Drive, Raeford, pleaded not guilty to second offense driving under the influence. He was found guilty of the lesser offense of careless and reckless driving. A sentence of four months was imposed and he was fined $200 and costs. Jerald Martin, Lumberton, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and driving without a license. He received a sentence of 12 months. Final judgment was entered on Riley Jordan, 110 Fulton St., Raeford, who pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence (second offense) and was found guilty earlier.
