Merchant Bawling Tie On For Top Spot By Larry Long There remains a lie for the top spot in The Raeford Merchant Bowling Action. Last week Earl's Electric tripped John's Short Shop three games to one. The Barbers from Hollingsworth shaved McMil lian Grocery three games to one. County Line Plaza smeared Airco Machine Shop four games. Marks'' Food continues to move up the ladder by turning back Hunt's Trucking three games to one. Melton's Heating & A/C dumped Raeford Auto three games to one. The high series last week went to Harry Walters for Hunt's, a 577 series with a 212 game. The high 200 last week went to McMillian's Larry McDonald, a 232. Others over 200: Thad Marks for Marks' a 221 and teammate Ben Elledge a 225; Thomas Ham for the Barbers a 213; Bobby Powell for Earl's a 202; George Hendrix for John's a 201; Alex Kelly for Plaza a 201; and James Nixon for Hunt's a 200. This week's schedule: the Bar bers battle it out with John's Short Shop, Earl's meets Melton's Heat ing, Hunt's faces C.L. Plaza for the right to the third spot. Marks' meets McMillian's Grocery and Airco Machine Shop faces Raeford Auto. Bucks closed the season out on a sour note, losing to Scotland 34-b. The Bucks' only score came on a yard run by Elvis Purcell in the fourth quarter. The Bucks whose play was outstanding in the defeat by Scotland were: Richard Cole. Darryl Cobb. James Washington. Mark Norton and Keith Rogers. The Junior Varisty ends the season with a ^-5-1 record. There were 35 sopho more hopefulls scheduled to report at this time, according to Coach Buchholz. Seven were immediately moved up to the varsity squad, ten were unable to report due to (arming and only eighteen were present. Buchholz said the outlook was dim as the J.V.'s averaged only 13 boys at practice throughout the pre-season. School started and the ten absentees reported -- five weeks late -- how can you play a J.V. schedule with such tremendous handicaps, asks Buchholz. Tobacco won out and the "Baby Bucks" suffered embarrassing losses at 71st and San ford. Finally, in the fifth week of the season, the young sophomores began to play up to their potential, according to Buchholz. winning over Lakewood. Lumberton. Cary and Bowman and tying Pinecrest. Buchholz says the future should be bright at Hoke High with 25 sophomores moving up to the varsity to join their seven class mates. The handicaps can be overcome. Buchholz says. Midget Football Vikings, Falcons Win To Cap Off Season Last Saturday night the Vikings and Falcons recorded victories tn the final games of the Midget Football League for 1977. In the first game of the night the Rams received the opening kickoff and marched down the field with Rob Wilcox scoring from five yards out. The point after was not successful. In the second quarter the Vik ings scored with Calvin Dixon going around right end from five yards out. The extra point failed, making the score 6-6 at half-time. In the third quarter. Leon Bruton scampered 61 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The extra point play failed. In the fourth quarter both defensives tightened up. Final score was Vikings 12. Rams 6. In the second game of the night the Redskins had the Falcons back on their heels with a fine display of offensive football by running con secutive plays without a huddle. The Redskins, on their first posses sion. marched down the field and made a touchdown when quarter back Anthony Graham optioned to James McQueen who scored from five yards out. The extra point play tailed, leaving the score 6-0 Red skings. The Falcons received the second half kickoff and then slowed their own offensive punch by going for a touchdown with Jerry McMillian going in from seven yards out. On the all-important extra point McMillian got the pitch from the option play and scored the two points which made the score Fal cons eight. Redskins six. In the fourth quarter the Falcons threatened to score, but the Red skins put together a tremendous goal line stand. During half-time of the second game of the night, crowning cere monies were held for the "Little Miss Football." Members of the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission. Chairman W.K. Morgan and Mrs. Ellen Willis of the program committee crowned the queen. Kim Tuttle. and honored first runner-up Lisa Potts and second runner-up Lori Pickler. Men 's Football Western Auto Rolls Over Cowboys 15-6 In Men's Flag Football League action last Tuesday, Western Auto erased a 6-2 first-half deficit to claim a 15-6 win over the Cowboys. Jimmy Wood caught a seven yard pass from Jerry Tucker early in the second half to put W.A. ahead for good. Charles Crowder added some insurance points with a 37-yard run late in the game. Cecil Campbell caught a 40-yard pass from Wayne Mills to put points up for the Cowboys. 1 2 Total Western Auto 2 13 15 Cowboys 6 0 6 In the second game, Hoke Auto remained unbeaten with a 21-6 win over the Towne B.S. Chuck Davis scored H.A.'s first T.D. on a seven-yard pass from Tom Howell. In the second half Davis threw seven yards to Dairy Deese for H.A.'s final score. Danny Mc Gougan caught a four-yard pass from Bill Senter for H.A.'s other touchdown. Wayne Denkins scored from seven yards out for Towne B.S. ? WVMICU.J. Last week they came out on top of team Three Plus One, scratching all four games. Lucille McNeill had a game of 148: Lonzell Kelly gave a 178, Another 200 man on the spot light; Alexander Kelly scratched a 201 game with a divine 516 series for the leading team. As for Three Plus One. Robert McNeill slipped a 185. Another team with a devastating win was The Floaters who floated on a four game win. Maxine Holmes shared a 144. Geraldine Murray, a newcomer, floated a 145; and Artis Gay landed a 172. Halsecalken just couldn't get things on the go so they let them go. The Spare Getters spared three games to Under the Hill Gang. Under the Hill came on top with helf from a Fine performance by Linda Hardon with her 141 game. Priscil 1 a McCormick (Pris), a double figure bowler, went up hill with a tremendous 126 game, but Larry McDonald's 179 and Calvin Singletary's 165 held the team up. James Leggett and his better half shared the load alone with C. Kelly and T. O'Ham. M. Leggett had a 143 game and a 408 series, while J. Leggett turned in a 164. The Rookies, performing like Pros, ripped otY three games from Holly Davis Plus Two. The Rookie Pernell Kelly was going tor 200; however, he tailed by only two pins. P. Kelly had quite a night and is determined to reach the 200 pin mark. Sylvester McAllister turned in a 437 series. Thelma Grace hit a 146. For Holly Davis Plus Two. Kirk Davis bowled a 462 series. La McNeill matched up for a 153 game and a 432 series. Not only were the teams battling, but Thelma Grace and LaDaris had a go at it. Coming out on top -- yours truly. Poor Grace.
