Day At South Hoke South Hoke Elementary School hosted its first Physical Education Demonstration Day of this year Dec. b. South Hoke is one of nine schools chosen to represent the state as a demonstration school. The demon stration program is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Presi dent's Council on Physical Fitness. There are 22 states in the nation participating in the program. State Superintendent for Physi cal Education in Elementary Schools Floyd Woody attended South Hoke's P.E. event. He stated that one of the purposes of the program is to achieve creativity through P.E. According to Woody, the exercises are mental as well as physical. "These kids have to. think," he said, while observing an exercise in body movement. In order to become a demonstra tion school, first the school's faculty must show an interest in the program. Most schools in the program have a P.E. specialist on the campus. South Hoke's special ist is Wayne Mills who is also assistant principal. When the school decides to try to become a demonstration school, thev contact the Department of Public Instruction. Raleigh. They are evaluated to determine if they have facilities and staff neces sary to become a demonstration school. "We have turned down several schools tor one reason or another." Woody says. Perhaps the strongest criteria is the desire of the faculty. Without every teacher in the school wanting participation, the program would not work. Woody said, because the teachers must be willing to learn new and different methods in P.E. No special monies are allotted for this program. The schools work with available equipment and people in the community help. Woodv says the participation of the people in Hoke County is outstand ing/ The purpose of having demon stration schools is to show other schools how they can improve their P.E. programs. Over 7,000 people have visited the schools during this program. Loria S. White, elementary physical education co-ordinator for Hoke County says "Wayne Mills has done an outstanding job. His program reflects his personality. There are many surprises and outstanding and constructive ideas for physical education in his pro grams. We are very proud to have him." The Dec. 6 demonstration day program at South Hoke involved exercising, tumbling, locomotive skills, relaxation through music, agility activities and even a tug of war.
