LICE MAKE COME BACK -- Although head lice are making a come-back in this country. Hoke County Health Department officials say they are not a problem in the local schools. Health officials assisted in an inspection last week among county school children. They warn, however, that families should be on the lookout for the parasites. "No Lice In Schools, 'Health Officials Say Hoke County Health Depart ment officials assisted last week in an inspection for head lice among local school children and gave the schools a clean bill of health, according to Health Educators Eunice Clemons and Doris Fran der. Although lice were not found among school children here, the COUNCIL (Continued from Page 1 ) respond to the question since we are totally uninformed on airport operations. Since the airport was started years ago as a chamber project, we feel an obligation to the people of Hoke County to help find a proper answer to an extremely important question. "We appreciate this special ses sion of the council being called to help clear up some apparent mis understanding that exists. I he Chamber is completely impartial in fhis matter and fully intends to remain that way. Our interest would only be in what would be considered beneficial to all Hoke County citizens. "It is now the responsibility of those who asked the question to come forth and show why they feel a threat exists to future economic growth. " COMMENTS Local attorney Bill Moses was the first to speak on the issue. "The airport was designed to encourage industry." he said. "I'm concerned that we don't have competition among the operators at the airport for services. I don't think the local industries are satisfied with the service they're getting." Moses went on to say that he was concerned thai one operator at the airport was assuming control over all the buildings there. "I don't think that's the trend we need to take." he said. "Like any other city service, the airport is a vital element in the community. We need to provide service, encourage ^growth, and get rid of the bad name that I think our airport has gotten from people flying in and out." Gene Carter, president of The Bank of Raeford. said he disagreed Vith giving one man a monopoly on facilities at the airport. "Mr. Vance has said he will make improvements at the field at his own expense and will hire 40 people, some of whom would eventually move to Raeford." I Carter said. "As it stands now. you have to chase someone down to buy | gas at the airport." | Bill Boyles observed that airport operators are not dependent on gas sales for income. "I think there's room for more than one operation at the airport," Boyles said. "I think competition would improve the quality of services. At an intersection you'll build a gas station on all four corners. I think the same thing can apply at the airport. I think it is fair to assume that if the lease (with Thacker) is the same, the service will be the same as it has been in the past. It's a void yet to be filled. If someone else is willing to provide service. I think he should have an Opportunity." Mayor McNeill said that Thack er had been invited to attend the special session but was reportedly out of town. Others spoke in praise of Thacker's work at the airport. He I h " operated a parachute school ? i "e since 1968. Thacker has won Rawards in world competition and coached the U.S. Olympic H'arachute Team. educators cautioned that this is the season of the year most favorable to the parasite. "Head lice can happen to any one. anywhere," Miss Clemons said. "The important fact to remember is that the problem should be treated quickly because delays will help to spread the infestation throughout the com munity." Head lice are very tiny, greyish white in color, and make their home at the base of the scalp and shaft of the hair, especially at the nape of the neck and the area behind the ears. Miss Frander said. Occasionally they are found in beards and eyebrows. Dandruff and hairspray particles may resemble the eggs (nits); however, dandruff can be easily removed from the hair, the edu cators said. The eggs of lice cling to the hair with a cement like sub stance secreted by the louse and cannot easily be removed. In addition, other symptoms accompany infestation, such as persistent itching of the scalp, infected scratch marks and small bites, with the latter stages result ing in swollen lymph glands in the neck and underarms. "When one member of a family is infested, all members should be treated," Miss Clemons said. "Have the infected family member visit the doctor or Health Center for diagnosis and treatment. Follow the recommended method of treat ment prescribed by the doctor or clinic and practice good personal hygiene. Tell your children not to use other persons' combs or brushes and avoid wearing anoth er's clothes, particularly hats." Head lice have made a vigorous come-back worldwide, the edu cators noted. "In 1974, for example, approxi mately 3 million cases of head lice were estimated in the United States." Miss Frander said. "In 1975. more than 4 million Ameri cans were reported to be infested. Head lice may reach even more staggering levels in the future unless control of the parasite is taken seriously." CLINIC (Continued from Page I ) and Open Arms Rest home. Barbour said he was especially grateful to the Mental Health Clinic Advisory Board for lending its support and taking care of the refreshments and other arrange ments for the open house. Serving on the board are: Emma Minis. Steve Benkosky. Rev. Charles Litzenberger. Harry Wil liamson, Harriett McDonald, Melinda Leggett. Lucille McGregor and Clyde Jacobs. AROUND (Continued from Page 1 ) News and Observer dated August 26, 19.14. The paper belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Stocks and is very interesting, especially to someone like this writer who was a high school student at the time. This was during the depression years and some of the articles in the paper are about the "New Deal Policies." If you don't know what this means talk to anyone over 60 years of age and they will tell you about it. An article about General John J. Pershing wanting to protect Longstreet church and a story about the body in a Laurinburg funeral home. The paper is very interesting and brings back many memories, not just what's in the paper, but other things that happened during these years. ?
