On Sunday evening at 8:15 in the Raeford Presbyterian Church sanc tuary. the Raeford Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir will present its annual Christmas Music ? Candlelighting Service. Under the direction of Chris C. Watkins, director of music, the 40 - member choir will present the Christmas cantata, "The Promised One" by Ralph Karl Sydow. Based upon the Scriptures, this Christmas work is composed of eight sections, including: I. The Invitation, II. The Prophecy, III. The Prepara tion. IV. The Annunciation, V. The Magnificat, VI. The Nativity, VII. The Song of the Angels, and VIII. The Nunc Dimittis. Soloists for the cantata will be Miss Cecelia Ropp, soprano. Miss Miriam Ropp, alto, and Mr. Kenneth Koonce, tenor. All three soloists are soloists with the Raeford Presbyterian Chancel Choir and are well known for their outstanding vocal contributions. Miss Cecelia Ropp is a math teacher at Hoke High School. A graduate of Presbyterian College in Clinton. South Carolina, Miss Ropp is also the recipient of a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. While attending Presbyterian College. Miss Ropp was selected to perform in various choral groups where she was a soloist both at school and in European tours. Miss Miriam Ropp is a music education teacher in the Fayette ville school system. A music graduate of the University of South Carolina, Miss Ropp is well known in Raeford for hef many choral contributions to the Raeford Presbyterian Church and to the Hoke High School Chorus and Choral where she was head accompanist while in high school. Miss Ropp is also a piano and guitar teacher in the Hoke county area. She is the lovely daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. John C. Ropp. The tenor soloist is Kenneth Koonce. Mr. Koonce has starred in the Pembroke State University production of "South Pacific." and has achieved various musical honors. Koonce was one of the few freshmen ever selected to sing in the UNC-CH Men's Glee Club in their first year in college. A former student of Mrs. Mary Archie McNeill, he is presently employed by Burlington Mills of Raeford. Immediately after the conclusion of the music the Reverend John C. Ropp will conduct the candl^ lighting service. One of the most beautiful and moving experiences of the church year, each member of the congregation will light a canale during the singing of the beloved carol. "Silent Night" in token of passing the Light of God to one another as the Light of the World was passed to mankind 2,000 years ago. During this time the choir will perform "Tonight. Jesus is Born - A Quodlibet on 'Silent Night' " by Eugene Englert. Mr. Watkins will perform this with the choir on the Sterrhack Harpsichord on loan to the church from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurin burg." "This year 1 am only using the beautiful voices in my choir without using any outside soloists." say Watkins. "I decided that 1 would like for the congregation to hear our church's choir render its Christmas music with a family - type atmosphere floating from the choir loft. And this choir is a family! So many of these people are like family members to each other and the love that we have from one another comes through in our music. During this season of love and well ? wishing to mankind 1 believe that this atmosphere will be an inspiring touch to the heart of the congregation." The congregation is cordially invited to attend a reception honoring the choir after the evening * service given by the Women of the Church. The service will also be broadcast over WSHB on Sunday night. oke ig blights by CaHos Miller "Sing We Now of Christmas!
