Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of young people ages 1
to 24. Since the 55 mph speed limit became law in 1974, many factors have
combined to cause a significant drop in these senseless highway fatalities.
The lowered speed limit placed North Carolina drivers in a smoother, safer traffic
flow, while allowing greater control over the vehicle and additional precious time to
react.
Yet North Carolina drivers are still speeding. So the N.C. Highway Patrol reminds us
that 55 mph is the law and it is enforced.
