Agri. Extension Agent Some of the problems that homeowners can expect on orna mentals and fruit are: black spot and powdery mildew on roses: leaf gall diseases on azaleas, rhododen dron and camellias and also petal blight on these plants; fire blight; scab; cedar apple rust on apples and pears; and gray mold in strawberries. Other things to look for include needle cast on pines, fusiform rust in pines, sycamore and dogwood anthracnose and apple rust on red cedar. Most of these things need to be prevented rather than try to control them after they occur. An early spray program can be most effec tive for control. * * * * * * This past year we had a rough year for scab in our pecan trees. This is indicated by the black fruit inside the pecan or no fruit at all in the inside of the nut. This disease starts during the time pecan trees bloom and pollination occurs. It must be controlled at this point in time or there is nothing you can do later. It occurs most when the humidity is high and there are cloudy days. If buds are burst and first leaves are showing, the trees should be sprayed with Cyprex, Benlate or DV-ter for control of scab. Sevin can be used for pecan weevil control starting from mid August to mid-September. Proper fertility and lime can help to keep trees healthy and reduce diseases and insect attacks. * * * * * * Tobacco growers should keep a close eye on the plant beds during the warm days. Temperatures un der the plastic can become ex tremely high during the day and the young plants can be destroyed. Holes in the plastic or some circulation of air from the ends of the bed is recommended. Make sure that tobacco land to be fumigated be prepared and the waiting period for fumigants ob served. Remember fast growing plants will usually make the best quality tobacco.
