Scouts Need Name For ^Campsite The new Pines of Carolina Girl Scout campsite in Richmond county needs a name. Girl Scouts in the 20 - county council are being asked to submit their choice of names. The campsite is a large primitive area, with low sandy hills and tall pine trees. There are beaver ponds and beautiful spring - fed creeks, open fields and a wide variety of plant and animal life. The camp will be a place to study and appreciate the natural environ ment. Names submitted should reflect :the special nature of the campsite. . Send names and a statement of reason for the selection to the council office by April 30. The fin&l choice will be announced at the opening ceremony on May 28. For further information, girl scouts should contact their volunteer area chairman or field director. Trade Fair Next Week The Woman's Club of Fayette ville will present its llth annual -Trade Fair. "EXPO '78." on April 1 and 2 at Cumberland County Memorial Arena, and tickets may be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the Trade Fair are used for the restoration and maint enance of the three historical buildings at Heritage Square. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Saturday. April I. and close at 9 p.m. Sunday. April 2. the hours will be from 1 to 7 p.m. There will be free parking. In addition to many exhibitors who have had booths every year, there will be many new offerings. Some of the interesting items: Rug Cleaning, Mountain-made furni ture. Radio Stations. Fashions in Eye Glasses. Crafts. Floral dis plays. boats and campers. Crime prevention and C ommunity Watch Programs. Food. Fabrics. Jewels and Junk. N.C. Museum of Art. U.S. Post Office, .i puppet show, and Buttons the Clown and Clown Alley. The list goes on an on. as there is something of interest for everyone. Xoth adults and children. Gem Show In Raleigh The Tar Heel Gem and Mineral Club of Raleigh will sponsor its second annual Gem and Mineral Show March 31 - April 2 in the Scott Building on the N.C. State fairgrounds. The 1 ar Heel Gem and Mineral Club is a non-profit group or ganized to further knowledge and increase appreciation of the earth sciences, geology, gemstones and minerals. There is no admission .charge. Many educational exhibits and lectures are planned. There will also be demonstrations of different phases of lapidary work including faceting, polishing stones for jewelry, jewelry making, silver work and opal polishing. Show hours will be 0-10 p.m. Friday. 10 a.m. -M p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-o p.m. Sunday. ^Scheduled b'PCHURCH BASEBALL TEAM - The Upchurch Junior High School Baseball Team got its uniforms last week and dressed out for practice. Up church Faculty Wins Benefit Game The Upchurch faculty defeated the Hoke High faculty by a slim 85-84 decision in a basketball benefit game to aid the Upchurch athletic fund. With the action at a high pitch, it appeared as though the N.C.A.A. Championship was at stake as the two teams battled it out up and down the court. At the end of the first quarter Upchurch had scored 18 to Hoke's 1 . Upchurch kept up the pressure and had a good cushion bv half time. 38- 2b. W.K. Morgan and Kevin Samp son were high scorers for Upchurch with a 27. 2.3 performance. Tubby Smith led the Hoke attack with 47 points, followed by McMillan's 14. Smith gave a fine performance and the crowd was ecstatic at each rebound he commanded, and each dunk that was forced to the bottom of the basket. The pace of the game never seemed to lighten up as the Bucks pulled within live points after the third quarter. 57-52. The men seemed to fight the fatigue that was surely a big factor for both teams but the last quarter denied any fatigue as Upchurch scored 28 points to the Bucks' 32. Heilig-Meyers Considers Sale Hyman Meyers, president ot Heilig-Meyers Company, said this week that the company is engaged in preliminary discussions regard ing the possible acquisition of the company by an undisclosed buyer but that no agreement has been reached. Sampson Callender h h 23 4 17 i 2 Rescuemen Complete CPR Course Eight members of the Hoke County Rescue Squad completed a Cardio- Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course March 2, instructed by squad member Johnny Milton. The nine-hour course instructed the men on how to revive people whose hearts and breathing have stopped for one reason or another. Eleven members of the squad are now proficient in these life-saving techniques. The course was given at the Rescue Squad Building here. The eight who successfully com pleted the instruction were: Eddie Allen. Jimmv Riley. Mitchelle Wal ters. CarHon Brock. Jim Wade. Cjiris Gaddv. Steve Wimberly and Jerry Johnson. Bobbv Conoly and Jim Wade recently completed a Emergency Medical Service Communications course at Fayetteville Tech. The course involved communications with a hospital while en route with a patient. Student Bowling League Organizes The Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission and the Hoke County Board of Education are working together with Tom Iuliucci. owner of Lafayette Lanes in Fayetteville. in order to sponsor a student bowling program. Students will be taught the basics of bowling and formed into teams (3 to 5 students each) to bow l in one of three handicap leagues: ele mentary. junior high, and senior high school. The participants will be sepa rated for team competition by grade groups: three - six. seven - eight, and nine - 12. Each team will bowl a set of two games against a different team in the same league each day of bow ling. The program will be held on Saturday mornings for eight weeks beginning April 15 - June 3. Weekly cost will be S2.25 per participant which includes trans portation. two games, shoes and administration fee. Transportation and drivers will be provided. The maximum number of students which will be eligible to pattipate will be IbO. Each Saturday the busses will depart from the Gibson Building at Hoke County High School at 8:30 a.m. and w ill return to the same location at noon. Parents are responsible tor providing transportation to and from the Gibson Building. Busses will depart very promptly each Saturday. Departure and arrival times may have to be changed as deemed necessary due to parti cipation. Students interested in this pro gram must complete the registra tion requirements by Friday. April at the Hoke County Parks and Recreation office, first come, first serve basis. Without the minimum number of students (40) this recreational activity will be can celled.
