% If I told you that 1 have in my
possession a prescription that, if
filled and taken, would guarantee a
life of peace and power ? assum
ing, of course, that you believed me
? 1 am sure that you would be
willing to pay a substantial sum of
money for that prescription. Your
assumption, very likely would be
that what you would receive for
your money would be a bottle of
pills, capsules, or some medicinal
formula from your local pharma
cist.
If, instead of receiving some kind
of pharmaceutical product, how
ever, you were to be given a piece of
paper upon which was inscribed
various passages of scripture ?
such as those listed above ? you
would probably feel you had been
cheated. After all, we're a society
that pops pills, not scriptures, to
deal with our ills.
A man suffering from a very
serious disease came to a physician
friend of mine, proclaiming, "I'll
do anything to be cured of this
condition!" The physician outlined
a program of various practices and
disciplines which would have sub
stantially altered the patient's life
style. The program included only a
minimal amount of medication.
Although the prognosis without
this program was "terminal," the
man who had said he'd "do
anything" refused the program that
was proposed. He had been looking
for a pill, not a program. He
wanted to be healed, but he didn't
want to have his life changed.
The Bible gives us many pre
scriptions for the kind of life all of
us say we would "give anything" to
have. Perhaps one reason we do not
take them seriously is that they
seem too simple, too commonplace.
In 2 Kings 5 we find the fascinating
story of Naaman the Syrian general
whose career is threatened by
leprosy. Journeying to Israel to seek
healing from the Prophet Elisha,
the great general is contemptuous
of Elisha's command to "Go and
wash in the Jordan seven times, and
your flesh will be restored..." He is
on the verge of going back to Syria
when his servants come to him and
reason: "My father, if the prophet
had commanded you to do some
great thing, would you not have
done it? How much rather, then,
when he says to you 'Wash, and be
clean'?" (5:8-14).
So too. when the writer of Acts
spells out the simple resources
which made great the life of the
apostolic Church ? "they devoted
themselves to the apostles' teaching
and fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and the prayers" (2:42) ? we
tend to dismiss them because they
do not seem very unique or
dramatic. Yet it was because of
that simple prescription of the
ordered life together that we also
read that "many wonders and signs
were done through the apostles"
(2:43).
The prescription for a life of
spiritual power and peace is no
secret and it is never beyond our
means if we reallv want it.
Giving The Right Time Of Day
No Longer An American Problem
by Robert C. Radcliffe
National Geographic News Service
We are used to it. now. But it
was "contrary to nature" 95 years
ago when Americans turned their
backs on the sun and reset their
watches.
That was in 1883 when Ameri
cans joined other countries in
dividing up the world so everyone
could keep in step with the
quickening pace of the times.
Railroads and the telegraph were
shrinking the world, today made
even smaller by jet airliners, the
telephone, radio, and televisoion.
So. way back then, the world was
cut up into time zones. 24 of them.
City Council
(Continued from Page 1)
tion of the cemetery.
flh The board approved the pur
chase of an engine for a Chevrolet
pumper at the Raeford Fire De
partment.
The board was informed that all
but 2 percent of city taxes over the
last 10 years have been collected,
and the city manager commended
the department for a job well done.
On a request by Councilman
Morris, the board approved free
taps for water and sewer service for
the new Scout Hut located across
from the Civic Center.
The board voted to hold its
meetings 30 minutes earlier. In
accordance with that vote, the next
meeting of the council was set for 7
p.m. on October 2.
Around Town
(Continued from Page 1)
furnished the hut and lot. but
donations were made by many
business firms for this project.
When the work is done I will try to
get a list and run them in this
column so that you can express
ke<?ur appreciation to these civic -
Winded people.
This is an asset to the community
and the lessons the boys will get

each spanning 15 degrees of longi
tude. And everyone reset his watch.
It was about time.
For. according to the National
Geographic Society, in those days
nobody ever really knew exactly
what time it was. People followed
the clues of nature--sunrise. high
noon, and sunset--to tell time.
UN REGULAR REGULATORS
Jewelers took their own readings
of the local sun time, and it wasn't
unusual for neighbors' timepieces
to be many minutes apart because
they had set them by the different
jewelers' regulators.
New York and many other cities
had a 2-Vj-foot time ball hoisted
atop a pole on a tall building's
rooftop and visible for miles. If you
wanted to set your watch according
to citywide local time, you kept
your eye on the time ball. When it
dropped down the pole, it was
exactly noon.
A hundred years ago. Michigan
had 27 local times in different
communities across the state. Wis
consin 38. Illinois 27. and Indiana
23.
Sun time changes at the rate of
one minute every 13 miles as the
sun seemingly slides across the sky
from east to west. It didn't seem to
matter much that the time was
different down the road apiece until
railroads came along and started to
move passengers far out of their
hometown local times.
100 NOONTIMES
Adding to the confusion, trains
ran on the local time of the biggest
city on the track. Across the
country, railroads used some 100
such local times. A traveler from
Maine to California would have to
reset his watch 20 times to keep up
with the local railroad time.
People started to say that this
was not the way to run things in an
up-and-coming nation. The rail
roads soon backed an idea put
forth by Charles F. Dowd who had
worried about the problem while
prinicpal of a ladies' seminary in
Saratoga Springs. N.Y.
His idea was to split the land
pretty much the way North Ame
rica is divided today, into Atlantic.
Eastern. Central. Mountain. Paci
fic. Yukon. Alaska-Hawaii, and
Bering Standard time zones.
At first there was a lot of pulpit
sermonizing, street-corner debat
ing. and newspaper editorializing.
Predicted the Indianapolis Senti
nel: "Railroad time is to be the
time of the future. The Sun is no
longer to boss the job."
But on Nov. 18. 1883. Americans
adjusted their timepieces.
