Vo-Ed Week To Stress Citizen Involvement More effective involvement of citizens in planning the course of vocational education will be em phasized in this year's observance of Vocational Education Week February 11-17. In his proclamation of the North Carolina observance. Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., called attention to the effort to enlist more active partici pation by citizens in the vocational education programs of the public schools and the community college system. Chief feature of this year's Vocational Education week will be a statewide Television Forum at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 15, when groups of people will gather in an estimated 100 places to view a special telecast and discuss the issues raised in it as well as other pertinent topics. Two members of the State Board of Education will appear on the forum telecast: Dr. John Tart. president of Johnston Technical Institute, and Richard Manz of Roanoke Rapids, who is power superintendent for the Horner Waldorf-Champion Paper Co. Tart is chairman of the Board's Voca tional Education Committee, and Manz is chairman of the SBE Community Colleges Committee. Numerous other local observ ances and displays are being plan ned. Each local school system has a director of vocational education or a local education planner who serves as liaison for the special observances. One of the chief topics for discussion in the forums will be ways to improve the connection and continuity of high school and community college/technical insti tute programs. Another will be the role of the local advisory councils on vocational education, composed of representatives of various busi ness/industrial and social interests. Farm Items By W. S. Young, Agri. Extension Chairman & Freddie O'lN'eal, Asst. Agri. Extension Agent The district meeting of Flue Cured Tobacco Cooperative Sta bilization Corporation will be held on February 12. at 2 p.m. in the O P. Owens Agricultural Building in Lumberton. All growers are invited to attend this meeting. Also, a director from District 4 will be elected at the meeting. Many growers have expressed dissatisfaction with the way the tobacco program is being run at this time. This is one of the places to speak out and let your wishes be known. Also a complete report will be given on the Stabilization s operations. * * * A few facts about tobacco, corn and soybeans should be ot interest to growers. A minimum cost budget for tobacco when 1.800 lbs. are produced is S.73 per pound. A high-cost budget for the same poundage is SI .40 per pound. This does not include the rent for any poundage purchased. The basic quota for 1979 in Hoke County is 3.7b2.40b pounds. The effective quota is 3,b55.b94 pounds, and the 1978 eftecttve quota was 4,189,077 pounds. This means that our income from tobacco will probably be down next season. 1979 Tag Sa In addition to being cold. Feb ruary may also be a costly and worrisome month for many North Carolinians, according to the Division of Motor Vehicles of the state Department of Transporta tion. . . Prospects of standing in long lines or receiving traffic citations for operating vehicles not properly registered mav face some citizens, said Elbert L. Peters. Jr.. Com missioner of Motor Vehicles. "During the first two weeks ot the registration renewal period this year, about 200.000 fewer license plates and stickers had been sold compared to 1978.- Peters said, noting that "despite excellent coverage bv the news media on the advantages of purchasing early, approximately 3b percent fewer tags and stickers have been sold this year in this initial 14 - day period." Sales began January 2. "But there are indications that sales have picked up during the past two weeks." he said. We encourage vehicle owners to pur chase their tags or stickers now while the lines are usually short. Peters said owners who have not received a 1979 renewal card should notify the motor vehicles division immediately by telephone at (919) 733-b505 between 8.30 Gatlin In 5th Term On Baptist Board Robert Gatlin of Raeford. a retired engineer and engineering instructor, recently started his fifth term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina. He and the other members of the board held their organizational meeting for the new year January lb at Mills H~me in Thomasville. one of the Baptist children s homes. Gatl n was elected to the board's executive committee. Gatlin started his first term in 1952. DOUBLEUP Break-even prices for corn are $2.20 per bushel when 120 bushels per acre is produced. For soybeans, it is S5.28 per bushel when 21 bushels are pro duced. and S4.22 when 35 bushels are produced. * ? * POLLING PLACES FOR DAIRY VOTE Polling places have been set up in Hoke County for voting by Grade A dairy farmers in the North Carolina Dairy Referendum on March 6. according to Freddie O'Neal. As sistant County Extension agent. The polling places will be tn the Hoke County Agricultural Exten sion Office. Dairymen may vote between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The referendum is being held to give dairy farmers the opportunity to vote on the question of continu ing the assessment of 6 cents per hundredweight of milk sold. Proceeds from the assessment will continue to be used for the promotion, nutrition education and research programs of the American Dairy Association of North Caro lina. The present assessment program has been in effect for three years. les Lagging a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. A renewal card will be issued and mailed to the vehicle owner. Stickers or tags may be pur chased at branch offices or through the mail from the Division of Motor Vehicles. 1100 New Bern Avenue. Raleigh, N.C. 27697. Peters said the agency could not guarantee delivery of tags or stickers ordered through the mail after February. "If owners receive their renewal card after February 1. they should make their purchases at a nearby branch agency," said Peters, noting that there are more than 100 locations across the state. Owners who have not received renewal cards also may purchase 1979 tags or stickers with last year's card. To save time. Peters sug gested owners should line through any incorrect information and print in corrected material prior to going to the branch agency. Failure to display 1979 stickers or tags by midnight February 15 is a misdeameanor. Conviction of this offense may result in cost - of - court fees, which are S27 in most cases.
