As the pit hardens and the knife will not cut the seed, thinning time is over. At the top of the tree fruit can be left 4 to 6 inches apart; in the middle 6 to 8 inches apart; and at the bottom part of the tree 8 to 12 inches apart. Also remember that a tree will produce a certain volume per tree. This can be 1 - inch fruit or 3 - inch diameter fruit. Now is the time to send in your request for purchases of new peach varieties. You need to act now for trees to be budded in early June for planting in early winter. Contact R.W. McMillen. N.C. Foundation Seed Producers. 1246 Williams Hall. N.C. State University. Raleigh.
