Hoke Highlights
by Donna Holland
Some weeks ago the Board of
Education did a very painful thing
to the students of Hoke County.
They feh the techers needed a rest.
Therefore, despite numerous com
plaints, they demanded that stu
dents take a Summer vacation.
Because children and teenagers
always try to be as agreeable as
possible, everyone decided to grin
and bear it.
After checking with some Hoke
High students, I discovered that
many of them had found a variety
of activities available to fill in some
of the hours they could not be in
school. In fact many of them were
busy at school.
A Band camp was held the week
of July 23rd. Mr. Jimmy James and
85 Band members sent from morn
ing until night preparing for the
1979 Marching Season. They have
also had many practices at night.
Rainy weather has slowed them
down, but the show is almost ready
and everyone has a treat in store.
The girl's tennis team has been
practicing for the past few weeks.
With the good practice sessions
they have been having under the
supervision of their coach, Mrs.
Cheryl Farmer, I am sure we can
look forward to hearing some
outstanding things about them this
season.
Members of the Music Booster's
Club have not been idle during the
Summer. A Gas Rafle was held on
August 31st. The winners are being
announced in The News-Journal.
Club members would like to thank
everyone who helped to make this
money making project a big suc
cess.
Football, as usual, is a very
popular sport this year. The players
nave been practicing faithfully,
despite the hot weather. Go out and
support the hardworking Bucks
and their hardworking coaches!
David Locklear, the coach of
the girl's golf team, has been busy
working with the girls each after
i noon to prepare them for their
!? upcoming matches. We wish them
the best of luck this season.
A new face will be seen at Hoke
High this year. Dr. Lenwood
Simpson is our new principal. We
will miss Mr. Oxendine, but look
forward to getting to know Dr.
Simpson and hope he will enjoy
being here with us.
We have a very good Athletic
program in the Hoke County
Schools. One group that plays a big
Eart in making this possible is the
loke County Booster's Club. They
are having their annual member
ship drive at this time. They need
your help. Be a booster!
It is very evident Summer does
not mean that the activities at Hoke
High come to a standstill. The
biggest problem for the students
now will be to try to squeeze in a
little studying every now and then.
It won't be easy, but somehow they
will manage to do it.
We hope all the teachers enjoyed
their vacation.
Again this year, I will be writing
the Hoke Highlights every week.
The people of Hoke County are very
interested in what we are doing, so
be sure to keep me informed about
the activities of your club and
organizations.
The Hoke County Chapter of the
Health Occupations Students of
America and the Future Business
Leaders of America started off with
a bang by sponsoring the first
dance of the school year. It was
held on Friday night after the game
against South View High School.
Everyone enjoyed the dance and
being together to celebrate the
Buck's first victory of this season.
This year the annual staff has a
new advisor, Mrs. Susan Houston.
Mrs. Wanda Ingram has been the
advisor for the past several years
and all of the members hated to see
her leave, but they agreed that Mrs.
Houston will be a good replace
ment.
The annual staff would also like
to announce that the 1979-80
EKOH will be on sale the week of
September 10th through 14th.
Seniors only, may purchase an
nuals with the name engraved on
the cover for S13.00. The price for
all underclassmen will be $12.00.
An organizational meeting for
the Hoke County Youth Council
was held on Thursday, September
6th in the Hoke County Parks and
Recreation office. The Youth
Council is designed to get teenagers
involved in activities of all types
throughout our country. All stu
dents in grades eight through
twelve are urged to join. We hope
