Lumbee River EMC
Gets $ 1 Million Refund
Lumbee River Electric Member
ship Corp has received a
$1,062,644.88 refund from
Carolina Power and Light Com
pany.
According to LREMC General
Manager Deri Hinson, the refund
of $842,250.71 in principal plus in
terest of $220,394.17 is a result of
overcharges for electricity purchas
ed from CP&L during the period
May 1976 through December 1977.
"Lumbee River EMC did not
raise its retail rates enough to pass
all of the CP&L wholesale increase
on to its member-owners," Hinson
said. "The Rural Electrification
Administration and the National
Rural Utilities Cooperative
Finance Corporation hold the
mortgage on LREMC's facilities
and have prescribed that a portion
of the overcharge refund must be
used by the cooperative as a credit
to wholesale power costs in 1976
and 1977."
"Therefore," he continued,
"approximately half of the refund
will be used to offset the amount
of the wholesale power cost in
creases that were absorbed by the
cooperative during the two years."
"We are working with REA,
CFC and our consulting engineers
to determine how the balance of
the refund can be used in the best
interest of the cooperative and its
members, and we hope to have
everything finalized within 30
days."
