Over 300 Compete In Upchurch Field Day
Upehurch Junior High School
held its annual Track and Field
Day Friday with over 300 students
participating.
The preliminary and trial events
were held during the morning, and
the final events in the afternoon.
A picnic lunch was served on the
activity field. Each student and
teacher were provided with a drink
furnished by IVpsi Cola Bottling
Co.

The Hoke County Parks *nd Recreation Commission is

on Thursday, June 5, at 7:30 p.a*. Ail hittwmd participants
sbcmM now begin to plan their teams. One representative from
each perspective team should attend the organizational meeting.
All adult players must he IS years of age or have graduated
from high school. Each team will he limited to a maximum of 10
mcmfceii each. A team may start and continue a game with five
players, three men and two women or vice versa, but not four men
and one female or vice versa.
IVopk interested in playing but who are without enough
members for their own team, are encouraged to attend the
organizational meeting.

Swimming Lessons
The Hoke County Parks 4c Recreation Commission will be
offering swimming lessons this summer.
Please read the following and be ready to Mister on Saturday.
June 7, 10 a.m. at the Recreation office. Ail participants will
isgim* on a first come, first serve basis onfy.
Session I, June 16- June 27, Mon.-Fri.; Session II, June 30-July
II, Mon.-Fri.
Participants may sign up for one session only due to the limited
openings- These will be only five students in each class.
Classes: Advanced Beg., 9-9:45 a.m.. Advanced Beg.,
9:45-10:30 aUn., and Beginner, 10:30?11;1S a.m., and 11-15
noon, afl taught at L.K. Salzer's home on U.S. 15-A North (near
Senrlock School). ?
REQUIREMENTS
I* Registration foe of S9 per child (S5 instruction. $4
2. Parent or legal guardian must be present to register.
3. OHM must be at least 6 years old; v
4. Transportation must be provided by eadl individual student,

Commission can not be responsible for students after the dass

5. Beginner-Prerequisites (should be able to do already): Child
mast be able to touch and maneuver safely in three feet depth.
Also mothers are asked to remain outside of immediate pool area.

6. Advanced Beginner - Prerequisites: Breath holding 10
seconds, rhythmic breathing 10 times, prone and back floats,
prone and back glide -10 feet, prone and bade glide, with kick -
a) feet, arm stroke 20 feet, crawl stroke 20 yards, jump in deep
water, and front (five.

ber, no registration names will be taken prior to June 7 at 10 a.m.
Space is limited, so make plans to be at the Recreation office

Little League, T-Ball
Little League players should meet on Saturday, May 31, at 9
a.m. at Armory Parte, at which time alt players will be assigned to
i team.

assigned to a team. If you have not registered previously, you
must bring your birth certificate at the appropriate times.
Tennis Lessons
The Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will be
sponsoring two two-week sessions of group tennis lessons.
Classes will be limited to the first ten students who sign-up for
each scheduled time. The cost for each session will be $10 (15
hours of instruction). The classes will be taught on the Hoke High
School courts, v
Sasrion I win ran June 23-July 3. Beginners, ages 8 years-13
I. Beginners, 14 years and up, will
3 July 21-August 1. The ability levels to be
taught will be determined by the expressed interest of the public.
Classes during this session will also run from 8:30-10 and from
10:15-11:45 a.m.
T? Adeleke will be the instructor. Adeleke is presently
teaching and coaching in St. Pauls.

Senior Citizens, Youth Bowling
The Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will be
ring a seven-week bowling program for all interested Hoke
senior citizens and
p.m.
A bus will depart every Thursday at 1:15 p.m. from the ]
lot across from The News-Journal and will return by 4:3
June 26-Aug. 7. The bowling program will take place in
Lau tin burg at Laurmburg Lanes.
Cost for senior citizens and the Youth each week will be S2.00,
includes two hours of bowling, balls and shoes and transporta
tion.
Children interested in bowling must be at least 8 years old.
Parents Interested in volunteering as trip chaperones are
encouraged to contact the Recreation Office.
Each week the maximum number of bowlers wiD be 35. first
come, first serve basis.
To reserve a space for Thursday afternoon you must sign-up
and pay your S2 fee to the Recreation office.
Girls', Boys' Softball
The Parks and Recreatkm Commission is organizing a boys'
and gtrlf softball program.
Bern groups will meet on Saturday, June 7, at Armory Park.
The girl? league Is for ages 13-15 (must reach your 13th birthday
before Aug. 1 and must turn 16 on or after Aug. 1) and will meet
at 9 a.m.
The boys' league is for ages 13-17 (must reach your 13th
birthday before Aug. I and must turn 18 on or after Aug. 1) and
wit meet at noon.
All bnye and girls must bring their birth certificates.
