Housing Tips by Willi* Featbervtone, Jr. Anodalt Agricultural Extension Agent VEGETABLE ROTATIONS 1 Crops grown in the fall garden often determine what will be grown in the spring. The need to rotate crops is the reason. Experienced vegetable gardners know the value of proper crop rotation. They are aware that certain vegetables planted year after year in the same plot will decline in productivity. ? The factors that interact to effect | productive potential of the soil must be considered by gardeners who wish to plant many kinds of vegetables in the same garden each year. Some , of the most important factors to consider in planning a proper vegetable crop rotation are: soil borne diseases, nematodes, soil insects, organic matter, toxic chemical residues and the level of essential mineral elements. k In a small garden it is advisable to rotate families of vegetables where only a few plants of each kind are planted. For example, tomato, pepper, eggplant, and potato can be treated as a single crop in a rotation. Gardeners with "green thumbs" pay close attention to crop rotation. Storing Winter Squashes and . Pumpkins ? Gardeners should make every efffort to protect the fruits against skins and bruises during harvest. The fruits should be placed in a cool, dry location after they have been harvested. Unharvested vegetables on the vine will prevent the plant from continuing to bear. For example, a squash vine is programmed to grow only 5 to 6 fruits to maturity, but this same vine is capable of / producing IS to 20 fruits if they are harvested at the proper maturity stage before the seeds start to harden ThlFsame principle holds true for other crops like okra, beans, tomatoes, eggplant, pepper, and cucumbers. Gardeners should be reminded that maximum yields are obtained by harvesting all fruits of edible size or age as soon as P possible to make room for more young fruits on the plant. TASK FOR AUGUST --Check garden for nematodes. ? Sidedress tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, okra, and pole beans. ?Proceed with planting the fall garden. ?Plow under crops when harvest is completed. ---Continue to control weed, ^insects, and diseases. ? --Work on controlling blossom end rot on next year's tomato crop. ?Irrigate fall crops. Bridge Closed The Division of Highways of the North Carolina Department of Transportation closed the bridge on Phillips Church-George Overton QRoad (Secondary Road 1422) in Hoke County Friday approximately one week, according to Division Engineer H.H. Jordan. Located over Puppy Creek, the bridge was closed to allow DOT maintenance crews to make bridge repairs. It will reopen August 15. Traffic will utilize local roads. Leon Jackson, bridge mainte nance supervisor, said that every effort is being made to complete the project as soon as possible to minimize any inconvenience to the traveling public. Fire The kitchen in the home of Mattie and J.W. Singletary at 405 E. Prospect Ave., Raeford, was damaged by Fire about 4 p.m. Fhursday. Q Raeford Assistant Fire Chief Robert Jackson said the damage :aused by Fire and smoke amount id to about $1,000 to SI, 200. The days might be gone, but the rtemories are still vivid for this enternarian . Yes, Smith learned one thing for sure that you can't let anyone tell you how to run your newspaper. Keep up the good work, mayor. ? ? ? If you ever had your children play little league ball you will understand the following letter: Dear Editor, As an interested parent, I have been an avid fan of the Recreation - sponsored T-Ball, Little League games for years. The Recreation Department and volunteer coaches should be commended for their patience in working with our children. As a spectator, I have been in a position to witness the type of reactions these children are given while they participate in this sport. May 1 share with your readers some poetry ? author unknown ? (no explanation needed). Donna L. Bernhardt JUST A LITTLE BOY He stands at the plate with his heart pounding fast; The bases are loaded; the die has been cast. Mom and Dad cannot help him; he stands all alone. A hit, at this moment, would send the team home. The ball nears the plate; he swings and hepjisses; There's'a groan from the crowd, with some boos and some hisses. A thoughtless voice cries, "Strike out the bum." Tears fill his eyes; the game's no longer fun. Remember, he's just a little boy who stands all alone. So open your heart and give him a break For it's moments like this a man you can make. He's just a little boy and not a man yet. Author unknown * * * Wyatt Upchurch was by the office last week and left an article concerning poultry manure. The article states: "The nutrient value of poultry manure produced in North Carolina in 1979 which is considered economically recover able is estimated at approximately $22 million. This value is equiva lent to about 3 percent of the gross farm income from poultry." Of course this is of interest to poultry growers, but it was of interest to me because I can remember my father getting manure out of his horse and mule stable each year for the garden. I was wondering what or how many phone calls would go into city hall today if manure was broadcast over these garden spots in Raeford and a good wind would come from the opposite direction. Time marches on! * * * Dale Teal had the program at the meeting of the Raeford Kiwanis Club last Thursday night. He introduced Mrs. Jean Johnson who has just returned from a trip to China. She presented a slide presentation which was very in teresting and informative. ? ? * Watching the news on Channel 11, Durham last week brought forth a face on the screen which made me look the second time. The reporter was talking to a vice - president of CP&L about in creased electricity rates and said he was talking to James M. Davis, Jr. This is the son of Mrs. Bessie Sessoms Davis, who lives on East Donaldson Avenue, and the late J. Minor Davis who worked for The News-Journal when I started to work here 45 years ago.
