"DRAFT REGISTRATION"
This may seem like a strange title
for an educational article but
education touches on everything
that exists, so I am right on step.
Q Many of my best ideas come
from moments that 1 spend by
myself.
I am sure that some folks are
convinced that apparently I don't
spend any moments by myself
because I don't have any good
ideas. Friends or foes must admit
that I don't mind expressing an
idea, good or bad. This really
doesn't have anything to do with
^what 1 want to write about.
? I got into this complicated tale
because the ideas 1 want to express
on draft registration came to me
when 1 was mowing my lawn at 6:30
a.m., which simply proves a point
that you don't have many ideas at
6:30 a.m.
In a serious note I become
distressed when I try to analize
what is happening to our society

Barbara James,
Bride-elect
Barbara James, August bride -
elect of Dickie Lippard, was re
cently honored on several oc
casions.
Her fellow Jaycettes gave a
^surprise bridal shower on August 5
vat 7:30 p.m. at the home of Jennie
Gibson.
The refreshment table was cen
tered with a crystal bud vase
containing coral - colored silk
roses, which was the hostesses' gift
to the bride-elect. Refreshments of
homemade strawberry cake, iced
tea, and munchies were served.

0 On Thursday evening. August 7,
she was honored by the employees
of The Bank of Raeford at a dinner
held at the home of Mrs. John
Walker.
The honoree was greeted in the
dining room and presented a
corsage of daisies. Places were laid
for twenty in the dining room and
in the living room. Special guests
_ were the bride-elect's mother. Mrs.
OSam Creech, and the bridegroom -
elect's mother, Mrs. C.L. Lippard.
After dinner, the honoree was
showered with many lovely gifts.

The couple was honored at a
cookout on Friday evening, August
8, at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Johnson, Jr. Hosting the
occasion were the bridegroom -
?elect's family members.
Upon arrival, the bride - elect
was presented a daisy corsage with
red-checked ribbon. The honored
couple was also given a platter in
their chosen pattern.
Picnic tables were covered with
red and white checked cloths and
decorated with mason jars holding
daisies. The refreshment table was
accented by a whale - shaped
a watermelon rind filled with fruit.
"Family and friends enjoyed hot
dogs, hamburgers, and all the
trimmings. Homemade ice cream
was served for dessert.

and especially the young people
who will be our leaders of tomor
row. The draft registration is but
one example of what total freedom
will do for a nation. The sad part of
the whole sorry protest movement
against the draft and other seg
ments of society is that the protes
tors do not really realize that only
in a democracy will they be allowed
to voice their opinions and de
nounce the elected leaders. They
are so dumb that they don't realize
that in case of war that if we are not
ready with not only manpower but
brains, the freedom they enjoy will
become nonexistent.
I could hardly wait until my turn
came to go into service because I
was proud to serve my country.
Sure we had people that tried
everything to get out of serving
because they were afraid or had
other reasons but in general the
attitude that prevailed throughout
the land was Jjfide in serving our
country and freedom.
1 know this is bunk to the
protestors and it is a waste of time
to explain it to them, and us old
hands have some mighty evil
thoughts when we think of their
conduct, but they have their rights
whether we like it or not, and I am
sure when our mad spell passes we
wouldn't have it any other way.
That doesn't mean that we like it
but 1 would like to think that we
have enough sound judgment and
common sense to realize that in a
democracy we must put up with an
element that wants something for
nothing.
All protestors are not disloyal but
their actions must improve or their
reasons must be more convincing
before the general public will label
them as anything other than un
grateful citizens.
If those that protest the draft
could only show those of us that are
in favor of it another country that
would allow a Communist to insult
the governor without fear of repri
sal or reprimand; show us another
country that would permit refugees
to come into a country that a
dictator has thrown out. and once
they are in to furnish them medical
supplies and a place to live and to
try to make life better for them in
general.
They need to show us a country
that will permit students to protest
our way of life even when their own
country is holding some of our
citizens illegally and pretending the
same citizens are traitors.
The protestors ought to be able
to show us another country that will
Gome to the reseue-.of a downtrod
den people ftTat the rest of the
world has turned its back on. When
hurricane Allen tore up countries
that were alien to us we rushed in
with food and medicine.
The draft evadors need to tell us
what country joined us.
Young people have never been
guilty of doing a lot of thinking at
certain stages in their lives, and this
was true of us older heads in our
younger days, but 1 don't believe we
were guilty of civil disobedience
and draft evasion.
I pray that the protestors will not
live in a world of Hitlers, a Stalin or
a Castro, but irrational thinking,
careless acts and a lack of a
commitment to freedom is the first
step in assuring their children will
not enjoy the right to protest.
