The Marching Band of Hoke
County High School won three
first-place trophies in competition
October 11 at 71st High School,
then last Saturday won another for
getting the top rating of Superior in
the competition at Richmond
Senior High School near Rocking
ham.
On October 4, the band won the
Superior rating in the competition
in Winston-Salem, at Wake Forest
University's Stadium.
The band, which is directed by
Jimmy James, finished first at 71st
as best over-all band; Best Percu
sion or Drum Line; and Best Color
Guard; and also won the rating of
Superior. The Color Guard is the
flag and rifle squad.
Last year the band won a first
place at 71st also, and a third place
at Richmond Senior. Last Saturday
it was among 39 bands in competi
tion and performed in Class A,
which is for bands of at least 90
members, the class for the largest
bands.
The band is scheduled to com
pete also the next two Saturdays --
October 25 at Wallace- Rose Hill;
and November 1 at Sanford.
Hoke High bands in the past four
years have won 32 trophies (two are
plaques) in competitions.
James indicated Monday the
reason why the band wins trophies
consistently: the students in the
band have been practicing since
mid-July, and practice every school
day and, during the football sea
son, nearly every night, besides
performing at all home games.
