George Maxwell, a native of
Raeford, is now senior resident
C*?nspector for the U.S. Nuclear
?Regulatory Commission at the
Shearon Harris Nuclear power
plant under construction at New
Hill for Carolina Power and Light
Co.
He is the son of Mrs. O.B.
Maxwell, Sr., of Raeford. and is a
1962 graduate of Hoke County
High School.
Maxwell moved to Fuquay ?
Varina near the plant site in late
l^ummer from Bloomingdale, III.,
?-with his wife Beverly and their three
children, daughters Kelly 14,
Hollee 10, and Marcie 8.
Maxwell's duty is to watch the
materials, including thousands of
valves and miles of pipe, that go
into the construction of the plant to
help insure safety in the work.
In serving 10 years in the Navy he
worked under Admiral Hyman G.
Rickover. who was in charge of the
Navy's program for nuclear
powered submarines. He left the
Navy, though he liked the work,
because he was away from his
family months at a time. Maxwell
got into the NRC work after being
honorably discharged, and served
at about 50 nuclear plant sites
before coming to his present assign
ment.
Maxwell said that, so far. he has
found the construction crew re
sponsive in resolving problems he
discovers in his inspections.
Saying safety comes first for him,
he added that, personally, he
doesn't care if the plant never
opens if it's not safe.
His job is to see whether workers
from electricians to welders are
following procedures properly in
every stage of construction.
Maxwell is one of 20 inspectors
in Region 11 of the Atlanta Reactor
Construction Branch of NRC.

A class in photography will be
given by Graham Niven, in Room
7, at the Old County Office
Building 7-10 p.m. starting Jan
uary 13th and ending April 7.
Techniques in how to use your
camera" will be stressed.
Clarence Willis will teach a class
small-engine repair at the Hoke
High Shop. 7-10 p.m. on Wednes
day nights, January 14 to April I.
This will concentrate on lawn
mowers.
Ray Graichen, a retired CPA in
Pinehurst, will give a 14-hour
course in Estate planning on
Wednesday mornings, 10-noon.
starting January 28 and ending
March 11. in the Hoke County
Library. See special announcement
Appearing later. This class is
sponsored by the Retired Teachers
Association. However, the public is
invited to attend as long as spaces
are available.
Mrs. Graham will offer a class in
flower arranging at the Open Arms
Rest Home on Tuesdays 10- noon.
A few spaces are available to the
public if you would like to attend.
The class will start January b and
end April 14.
A class in the history and
organization of the Bible is planned
for Mt. Pisgah Church. Details are
not available at this time.
Returning Classes
The Great Decisions discussion
class, given each February for
renewal credit for Hoke County
teachers, is scheduled for February
3 to March 28 from 3-5:30 p.m.. in
the Board of Education Building.
Mr. Langdon will again be the
discussion leader.
Elizabeth Jones will again offer
an advanced income-tax class, after
the beginning class is finished,
March 9 to April 13. Both of the
classes are on Monday nights in
Hoke County Library.
