Soloists Are Named For
Merry Widow Production
Dr. Armand Kitto. Director.
Moore County Choral Society,
today announced the names ot
eight vocal soloists, six "Grisette"
dancers and a wall/ duo for the
Society's concert version produc
tion of "The Merry Widow." This
event, tailed Gala II. will be held in
the Cardinal Room of the Pinehurst
Hotel at 1 p.m. Sunday February
J 5. as a brunch followed by the
concert.
Dr. Kitto commented: "We are
following a trend which, in the past
few years, has brought a strong
revival of 'The Merry Widow' - the
world's most often produced and
hest loved operetta.
"Woven around a narrated plot
of charming nonsense, the music
scientilllates with lifting Veinnese
walt/es and capitating melodies
filled with fresh and melodic
invention. There is a swaying grace
of line to which one could dance
throughout the entire score. And
dance we will, with the famous
"Grisette' (popularly called can
can) girls and a wait/ duo ? all
singers front our own ranks.
"All of the operetta's music will
be presented but the performance
will be shortened to a fast paced
eighty minutes by the devices of
narration of the plot and elimina
tion of the entracte. Such favorites,
each often heard in it's own right,
as 'The Merry Widow Walt/.'
' Vilia.' 'I'm off The C'hev Maxi
mc's.' 'Red is the Rose of May
time' and 'Come Away to the Ball'
will be heard.
"An enthusiastic and talented
group of vocal soloists will include
Anne Freeze as Anna. John
Hatcher as Danilo. Elaine Sills as
Valencienne. Charles Gainer as
Caniille. Joseph Currie as Baron
Zeta. Martin Foster as Cascada.
Allison Lawrence-Smith as
Svlviane and Gail Summers as
Olga.
"Sheila and Raymond Wakefield
will be the wait/ duo. Under the
direction of choreographer and
performer Mary Lee Sehulte the
'Griselles' will be Barbara James.
Dell A I ford. Kathervn Pi//i. Con
nie McKoy and Billie Joyce Hill.
Dr. Herbert Horn, well known
concert pianist will be the accom
panist and Carol Klingensehmidt
the costiimer. Gala II chairman is
Sherry Bryant, working with di
rector Kathervn Ewing.

support effort of MCCS, which is
not publicly or otherwise funded.
