Administrator John Watson with Ruth McNair. director of McCain 's nursing services. | Staff photo. ) McCain Hospital (Continued from page 1) the hospital's operating budget at $3.2 million. "A savings of more than $2.2 million annually" could be affected by closing the hospital, the report adds, and "the patients (the incorrectly reported 30 to 40) could be served through community-based programs costing $1 million a year". Watson said the hospital's budget for the current (1980-81) fiscal year is $6 million and a frac tion. The state is paying half, he added, and the rest of the annual budgets come from Medicaid, Medicare, and hospitalization in surance payments, and from patients' personal funds. He said in previous years the state had been paying about a third of the budget, but the state share had to be increased because of in flation and the decrease in the number of patients. The budgets for previous years were $4,274,000 in 1974-75; a total of $4,376,000 for 1975-76; some $4,572,000 lor 1976-77; a total $4,983,000 for 1977-78; a total $5,275,000 lor 1978-79; and $5,329,000 for 1979-80. Watson also said that whether the hospital stays open or is closed, a $3(10,000 expense in the budget would remain each year. He said that is for providing drugs for tuberculosis patients free of charge in every one of the 1 (X) counties in the state. The drugs are issued to the patients by the county health departments. Ruth McNair of Raeford, the hospital's director of nursing ser vices. also expressed the concerns voiced by Watson. She said she was "very, very concerned about the employees" including herself. She said she would be five months short of 30 years' service if the hospital closed October 1. Mrs. McNair asked also what would happen to the patients if the hospital closed. There is something tremendous ly refreshing in the musical Fiddler on /he Roof, which depicts Jewish village life in Russia at the turn of the century. When Tevye was alone, he would simply talk to God -- in the field, on the road peddling milk, or out side his humble home. The way he talked directly to God is a picture of what our prayer can be. He prayed through conversation in a personal certainty of God's presence right with him. We, too. can talk to God when we are angry, heartbroken, excited, depressed, lonely, sad, hopeful -- at any time, for any reason. God is there. God hears and answers. We can tell God everything, not be cause our Creator needs to know, but because we need to tell Him. While we ask for help, direction, and strength, we can thank, praise, and honor God for what He is doing and has already done. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY To be real, prayer must be honest . - copyright -THE UPPER ROOM --Raymond M. Veh (Wisconsin) nave to see that ttiey took the medication they need, and this is why they were in the hospital in the first place, because some wouldn't take it on their own if they were at home. Mrs. McNair said the uncertain ty of the hospital's status has left employees wondering what was going to happen, whether they would or wouldn't have jobs. Some are looking for other jobs, because of the uncertainty, she added. McCain was the tirsl ot three state TB hospitals opened in North Carolina. It was started in 1908 as Montrose Sanitarium in the com munity near McCain. It also was the third TB hospital opened in the United States. State law required tuberculars to get treatment and says the patient can be forced to take it if he or she doesn't take it voluntarily. Viola tion of the law makes a tubercular liable to a prison sentence; conse quently, the original stateprison unit at McCain was designed to house tubercular prisoners and was connected in organization though not in location with the sanitarium. The establishment of the prison was authorized by the 1923 General Assembly and the building was erected on the hill below the tract that now contains the present buildings and grounds of McCain Hospital. The original prison building housed 12S inmates. It's about 200 yards north of the present hospital and is used now for storage. Watson said the TB patients among the inmates now are treated at the present state correctional unit by the prison's medical staff. The hospital's last tic with the prison was cut in 1975. The hospital was serving the prison's lung patients then with meals up till then, he said. Pilot Killed (Continued from page 1) and a skydiver, Capt. Thacker had made parachute jumps as well as piloting planes tor other skydivers at the airport on weekends. "Capt. Thacker was the best captain I've ever seen," his com manding officer said Monday at Gene Paul Thacker's home where several of Capt. Thacker's 82nd Airborne friends had gathered. Surviving besides Capt. Thacker's uncle are the officer's mother, Gail Thacker of Belfry; his brothers, Rob Thacker of Mt. Sterling Ky., and Eddie Thacker of the home; and his sister, Linda Thacker, of the home. A memorial service was held Tuesday afternoon at Ft. Bragg. Capt. Thacker's body was sent to Belfry for burial. Around Town (Continued from page 1) knew my age, 63, but some other people seem to want to keep it a secret. Maybe I am getting away from what was on my mind when this item started. Last week I wrote about hum ming a tune made famous by Gene Austin. Now Connie Ellis, compos ing room supervisor, always reads my column and tries to make my handwriting clear enough for the typesetters. While reading that item she dialed me and asked if it wasn't Gene Autry, rather than Gene Austin. I told her that it was Austin, and she said, when did he sing as she hadn't ever heard of him. Of course Connie was born after Gene Austin made "My Blue Heaven" popular. So watch what you write or say if you don't want to give your age. CARD OF THANKS I would like to thank our family and friends for all the nice cards, flowers and other gifts during both my wife and my sickness.
