HOSA HONORS -- Patricia Kellerman, District IV winner, is holding her trophies awarded for placing first in the trophy contest and third in the club activity book competition at the Health Occupations Students of America Club Congress held recently at Montgomery Technical Institute. Williamson Championship Flight Winner Don Williamson won the Cham pionship Flight of the Booster Club Golf Tournament held last weekend. Bill Lentz finished second, and Dewey Simpson third. Tony Yearby was the winner in the Fist Flight. Lawrence Bullard was first in the Second Flight, followed by Bill Archer, second, and Jerry Long, third. The Third Flight winner was Gene Webb. Bucks Bumped In Eastern The Hoke High Bucks' cam paign for the state high school 4-A boys' basketball championship was stopped Friday night by Bed dingfield of Wilson, 60-52, in the Eastern playoffs at Wilson. The Bucks kept close till the final period when Beddingfield's Edward Farmer and Thomas Lof ton scored six points in a row bet ween them, making the score 50-38. Marvin McKoy of the Bucks led the game's individual scoring with 17 points, and Beddingfield's An tonio McCray led the winners with 16. The loss gave the Bucks an over all season's record of 11-17, and the victory put Beddingfield's at 22-5. Beddingfield was eliminated Saturday night by Rocky Mount, 78-76, in an overtime period. Rocky Mount and Chapel Hill will play for the state title Saturday in the Greensboro Colliseum. Chapel Hill won the Western crown Satur day night, defeating Reynols of Winston-Salem, 67-55. The other Hoke scorers in Fri day night's game were Holl ingsworth 11, Bratcher and Johnson 8 each. Blue 6, and Moore 2. The other Beddingfield scorers were N. Bynum 2, Brahcn 8, Barnes 4, T. Score by periods: Hoke 10 13 11 18 = 52 Beddingfield 16 12 12 20 = 60 Benefit Bike-A-Thon Here March 28 There will be a bike-a-thon held Saturday, March 28. for the benefit of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the Hoke High parking lot and end there at approximately I p.m. The course will be five miles long and may be ridden as many times as possible during the four hour time period. I Sponsor forms are available at Hoke High, Upchurch Junior High, and Raeford Elementary Schools. Any child under the age of 18 must have the signature of his parent or guardian on the consent statement, which is included on the sponsor form, in order to ride the day of the Bike-a-Thon. Hoke Highlights by Donna Holland Last Saturday, four Hoke High band members attended the An nual Pembroke Band Festival at Pembroke College. Selected band members from all over the state at tended. Those students who represented Hoke County were: Alice Adkins - clarinet and Leslie Foster - bass clarinet in the junior high division; and Bryan Baker and Debbie Tolin - both clarinets in the high school division. These students spent the day practicing with others to prepare for a concert that was given that evening. The men who directed and instructed the music for the concert were Dr. Ray Haney and Dr. Frederick Fennell. He is presently conductor in-residence at the University of Miami School of Music. The band festival was very edua tional and enjoyable for all of the students wo attended. A National Math Test is being taken by high school students across the nation who excell in mathematics. This test was taken by selected students at Hoke High on Tuesday, March 10th. Grade results from this test will be averaged among all of the high schools that participated to see how the schools rank with one another in their math programs. Hopefully everyone did well on the test. Music Appreciation week was March 9th through 13th. In honor of this, two music groups from the high school visited the elementary schools to give performances. The Barber Shop Singers, who are directed by Mrs. Linda Huff sang at West Hoke and South Hoke Schools; and the Freshman band, which is directed by Mr. Jimmy James gave a concert- at Scurlock and J.W. Turlington Schools. The performances seemed to be en joyed by everyone. On Thursday morning, March 19th at 3:30, a group of students will be leaving Hoke High School for a ten day trip to London, England. We all plan to have a great time, and 1 will tell you about it when we return home. Our returning date is Saturday, March 27th. Morehead Planetarium Trip The Parks and Recreation Commission wfll be offering a senior citizens* trip to see "Easter, The Awakening" at the Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill on Thursday, March 26. The bus will depart from the big parking lot across from The News-Journal at 8:30 a.m. and should return by 5 p.m. The cost of the trip is 53.50 (admission and transportation), plus the expense of a hamburger ? type lunch . The first 28 people to register and pay wilt be permitted to attend. Contact the Recreation office for more information. Kite Contest Set The Hoke County Partes and Recreation Commission is sponsoring a Kjtefo^t on Saturday March !*, 1:30 p.m. at the big field beside Burlington Industries. Categories will include; most unusual kite, smallest kite, kite with longest tail, and largest kite. Age divisions will be: 7-9, 10-12, I3-up. Rules: all kites must fly at least one minute; contestants will have 10 minutes to get their kites in the air; contestants may enter all four events in his or her age division, and may win a first, second, or third place, but may receivc only one prize. The smallest kite must fly under its own power with at least 12 - 25 lect of string out and not from the force of being pulled; there must be at least live entries in each category per age division before prizes will be awarded. Entries will he taken starting at 1:30 p.m. at Burlington Field, free. In case of bad weather, the contest will be rescheduled for Saturday. March 28. Dog Obedience Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission will sponsor a dog obedience class March 23 - May 4, 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the N.C. National Guard Armory. There will be a $2S fee per dog. Dennis Brewster will be the instructor. Contact the Recreation office for more information. Intermediate Bridge There will be a five-week intermediate bridge class offered by Hoke County Parks and Recreation April 27-May 2S. 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Recreation office. Easter Egg Hunt Hey. children, the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt especially for you on Saturday, April 18. All kids ages 2 through 8 are invited to join the fun at McLauchlin Park at 10 a.m. Two separate hunting areas will be designated in order to divide the participants into groups of ages 2-5 and 6-8. Service Master of In diana, to Coker College at Harts ville, S.C., from Cape Fear Valley Hospital. He will serve as chief of en vironmental services for the col lege's campus complex. He will manage plant operations and I maintain building and grounds, and housekeeping services. Chason and his children. Chuck and Jennifer, will maintain their home on Rt. 4, Raeford, and a parttime residence in Hartsville. Earl Chason is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M.
