New South Hoke Principal Westall In Hoke Schools Since 1963 Wood row West all is going to work July 1 as principal of South Hoke School after serving since June 16, 1969, as West Hoke School's principal. West all has been serving in the Hoke County school system since 1963, and before going to the West Hoke position had been an as sistant principal at Hoke High (the W.T. Gibson section) and Up church Junior High School. Before coming to Hoke County he taught at Columbia, Bailey, Cornelius and Huntersville, all in North Carolina. Westall was born and reared in Black Mountain and graduated from Black Mountain High School in 1938. In August 1941, he recalled in a conversation last Friday, he and some of his friends decided to enlist in the Army, because the draft was going to "get" them sooner or later anyway. He said they also thought they could stay together all through their tour of duty. It didn't work that way, Westall said with a laugh. Westall wound up in England with a bomber group of B-17 Flying Fortresses in the Eighth Army Air Force. Before he came home, he became a veteran of 36 bombing missions over Germany and France, on a B-17 as flight engineer. He got shot down once, he said, "but it wasn't as serious as it sounds." The bomber got hit on a mission too badly to make it all the way home. But one of the crew saw a bombed - out airfield while the crippled craft was flying over France, so the pilot [>ut the plane down in a belly anding between two runways, and noboby got hurt. Did he get a Purple Heart (for wounds suffered in action against the enemy)? he was asked. "The only medals I got," he replied, were the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air medal with six clusters." Back home in Black Mountain after getting his honorable dis charge in May 1945 (the same month Germany surrendered), he decided to go to college, so he enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated in 1950 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in physical education and social studies. Later he earned a Master of Education degree, also from UNC at Chapel Hill. His first job in teaching was at Columbia's "union" school in Tyrrell County. "Union" mean all 12 grades, except kindergarten. There he taught social studies and physical education. He also coached the football, the boys' and girls' basketball and the baseball squads. Westall is married to the former Susan Duncan of Red Springs. She is secretary at Peterson School in Red Springs. They have three children, all boys -- Woodrow Hillis Westall, Jr., 28, manager of Wendy's restaurant in Durham; Joe, 27, manager of Kenney's shoe store in Wilmington; and Bill, 22, a rising senior, majoring in business, at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee (about 75 miles south west of Black Mountain). The faculty and staff of West Hoke gave Westall a farewell party recently, and he was given a gift from the group and gifts from individual people. At West Hoke he is being succeeded by Milton Williams, an assistant principal of Hoke High, and at South Hoke he is succeeding George Wood, who is the new principal at Scurlock School. Scurlock's principal, Floyd Caldwell, has been transferred to the same position at McLauchlin School, and James Bowies, Mc Lauchlin's principal, has been transferred to the position of director of remedial programs at Hoke High.
