"jp11 Duke Duke Thanks (Continued from page 1) preacher was saying any more than 1 do, and I've got some education. Got'a get that cat! 1 reserve the right to turn up my food, but let's face it, one meal a day looks pretty good no matter what it is and it is and it is pretty good. Gee! It's a long twenty-four hours when I see my folks eating three times a day and bedtime snacks. I just have to be content with extra water. Now, have you ever had your teeth cleaned or toenails clipped by a vet? It's fun to scare them and make them think I'm fierce and I could very well do without either treatment, but my toenails grow so fast I keep pulling the carpet. They have to go pretty often. I'm a big fellow and have lots of teeth and 1 sure don't like them messing | around in my mouth, but I guess it's much more pleasant for my folks when 1 get up pretty close and smile great big if my teeth are clean. The grandchildren are pretty nice to me. They wanted to wallow on me at first. It made me nervous and all that running and squealing still gets to me. If I've got to act like a grown-up people, why shouldn't they? I I did want to say, there is one place my people eat that suits me just fine. Altho' I'm not allowed to nibble at the crumbs on the floor, all the waitresses and especially the cashier love to give me mints when we get ready to leave. 1 wisn we could go tnere more often. I love the attention as well as the mints. Since I've been in Hoke County three years, I've almost forgotten my first home, but have enjoyed showing lots of young folks at school, civic programs, etc., how smart 1 am. I have a pretty good mind and don't forget very much. We visit uptown a lot and 1 know just where to take my charge. We have to go to the Post Office; even though 1 don't get much mail, we do hear from my Alma Mata once in a while. All in all, it's been a pretty good three years and I want everyone around here to know how much I appreciate you accepting me to the neighborhood, you're a good bunch of folks. 1 hope my fellow workers have found as good a neighborhood to live in as I have. 1 get to put on a show when I go to the hospitals. AH the nurses think I'm special and I just eat that up, and let them all spoil me as long as my people don't object. I've said enough, but felt 1 should say something to all my friends and loved ones for making me welcome so far, from my original home in Michigan. Sincerely, Leader Dog Duke P.S. Archie and Leader Dog Duke are graduates of Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester. Minn., and so graciously sponsored by the Lions Club. Housing Tips by Willie Featheratone, Jr. Assoc. Agricultural Extension Agent CHIMNEY CLEANING If you opt not to have this done professionally, you'll need the fol lowing tools: a wire bristle brush fitted to your chimney's contours, adaptable-length rods to watch the brush to, a 10-pound weight to "lead" the brush down the chimnev. ^ This will be a messy job. but the effect on your home can be lessened by closing off any openings to the stack. A wet blanket suspended over the hearth contains the dust droppings into the fire pit until it has settled enough to be shoveled out. If you choose to clean from below . entering the stack through a cleanout door, a good idea is to plug the space around the rod, ^ again containing the settlings. Plumber snakes attached to a brush are useful in cleaning out Ls and Ts in piping. STOVE PIPE CONNECTORS Don't overlook them. The best method here is to disassemble the pipe and clean it outdoors. Until you are an "old hand" with your stove pipe the best creosote de tection method is disassembly and visual inspection. Other methods are to tap the outer shell of the pipe, listening for a dull thud that indicates creosote buildup. Some owners use mirrors attached to rods to inspect inner walls of pipe. And while you're at it - why not inspect the way the pipes are fitted together? If sheet metal screws were not used to hold them together, chances are they have vibrated apart or will do so in the future, ultimately leaving gaps for heat - and sparks ? to fly through. A final pair of tips, born of unfortunate experiences: Empty ashes and creosote deposits into a metal container, because of the potential for charcoal to smolder for days. And. finally, most experts do not recommend as a routine practice the setting of very hot fires to "burn out" creosote. Such fires are potentially dangerous (if the creosote accumulation is serious) and are certainly corrosive of flues if the whole works ignites in your chimney. GROWN HERE ?? C.J.
