Bridge Mrs Upchurch On Thursday evening. July 23. Mrs. Lewis Upchurch. Jr.. enter tained members of her bridge club plus several visitors for dinner at the home of Mrs. J.W. Walker. Places were laid for seventeen for the three course dinner. Summer flowers were used throughout the home. High score prizes were awarded to Mrs. Joe Upchurch. Mrs. Robert Calhoun and Mrs. Robert Gibson. The consolation prize was won by Mrs. Gene Carter. A special guest for the dinner was Mrs. Neal McNeill who was remembered with a gift. Mrs. McNeill has recently moved to Lexington. Mr. Maxwell Celebrates 85th Birthday On Sunday. July 26, Mr. and Mrs. Graham Clark and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Maxwell honored Walter Steele Maxwell with a picnic supper at Sinclair's Pond to celebrate his 85th birthday, which was on Tuesday, July 28. Ap proximately 40 members of his family attended and he received many nice gifts. Mr. Maxwell was born July 28, 18% in Robeson County, which is now part of Hoke County. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Joe N. Maxwell. After attending school in the old Raeford Institute and finishing high school in Antioch he served in the U.S. Navy during WW1. Mr. Maxwell ran a General Merchandise store, J.N. Maxwell & Son, on the Red Springs Highway for many years and later he moved to Raeford and ran "The City Market" on Main Street for 25 or 30 years. On December 26, 1926 he mar ried the former Lena Naomi Beard. They had 2 children, W. Glenn Maxwell and J. Joseph Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell was a member of the Raeford School Committee during the war and for several years after the war. He has been a member of the Raeford United Methodist Church for 74 years. During this time he served as Secretary and Treasurer and was on the Board of Stewards for 20 years or longer. In 1967, after also being a farmer, Mr. Maxwell retired and rented his farm land. Local Debutante Honored With Cookout A cookout. honoring a local debutante Allison Poole, was given on the afternoon of July 19. Hosts and hostess for the occasion were Allison's cousin, Robert Wilson Jr.. and his parents. A backyard cookout with hot dogs and hamburgers including all the fixings was held at the Wilson's home in Fayetteville. Among the 37 guests attending were debutantes. Julie Gibson of Red Springs, and Mary Duane Gilliam, Ann Moss Nimocks, and Jean Schaefer, all of Fayetteville. Also attending was Allison's room mate from college, Susan Thomas, a debutante from Monroe. Coke Parly For Miss Douglas On Saturday afternoon July 25. Barbara Dougias was honored with a Coke party at the home of Mrs. Billy McNeill. Terri Tucker was also hostess. Upon arrival Miss Douglas was presented with a corsage.
