Help For Alcohol Problem Is Here Heavy Drinker Exposed To Several Hazards by TW Saadbilb Canter H?k? Cmmmtj U?lt This year in Hoke County w e've had S deaths attributed to alcohol. Some places alcohol is called "slow suicide." Death due to alcoholism can come in many ways: on the highways and from cirrhosis of the liver, head injuries, suicide, mur cMotzz <^HigfiCLgtit? iPamefa cA/lc&AfeiCt Earl Rose, an Insurance Sales man from the Farm Bureau In surance Agency spoke to Mr. Barkley's Driver Education classes. Mr. Rose spoke about the im portance of car insurance. The Science Club sponsored a cook-out on Tuesday at 5:30. The event was held at Mr. Lassiter's apartment. Members were asked to bring their food and whatever they thought necessary for the outing. This was the club s first event of the year, and they hope to have many following. Since winter is close, freezing or death due to exposure could be the next death attributed to alcohol. Alcohol lowers the body temp erature. It does not warm you up at the football game. It makes you colder. Alcohol causes the skin blood vessels to constrict and lowers the body temperature. Exposure to cold can cause death in temperatures above freezing. The body loses heat and the normal body function cannot continue for long when hypothermia (loss of body heat) persists. If you drink while hunting this winter, make sure you do not hunt alone. Do not go to sleep. If you drink alcohol to excess, make sure you are drinking in a warm place - not under a bridge or in the swamp or unheated house. Be a knowledgeable drinker. Alcohol is a drug, perhaps the most dangerous drug available to people today. If you see someone passed out this winter, please give assistance. Do not let the alcoholic die alone. He is sick, not a drunk. Remember the "good Samaritan"; do not judge the excess drinker as a drunk, no good, weak bum. He is a creation of God. just as you. Most of the alcoholics in Hoke County work, have families, and are considered good citizens. We see these people every day and talk about how sad it is that they drink so much. Yet we look at those two to three passed out on the road or stumbling down the street with no coat, in the rain, and become filled with disgust instead of pity. The alcoholic does not need pity or disgust. He needs help. Help is available at Sandhills Center, AA, and treatment ' centers such as Hebron Colony. If you are concerned about your drinking or a friend's or family member's, come to Sandhills Cen ter and talk with Dennis Brewster; go to A A on a third Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Open Arms Rest Home; or contact the Hebron group. Prevent other deaths caused by alcoholism. Do something now. Don't die because of the "fruit of the wine." Replace that fruit with the fruit of the spirit of soberity. Start being happy again. Experi ence living instead of death. Take time to care about yourself. Stop for a few minutes and ask yourself some serious questions about your drinking or your loved ones drinking: Does drinking interfere with normal activities? Do you plan drinking and avoid things that drinking is not a part of? Do you drink alone? Do you drink more than you did a year ago? Do you ever have shakes after drinking? Do you ever not remember what you have done while drinking? Do you feel guilty about your drinking? Has anyone ever told you. you drink too much? If you are answering "yes" to these questions, talk with someone about your drinking. Don't find yourself jobless, homeless, feeling hopeless, trapped in a bottle before seeking help. Contact AA, Hebron, or Sandhills Center. Help is available. We care and can help.
