Engel son are all set for their grand Christmas concert Sunday De cember 6. Enhancing the beauty of the music will be a fourteen piece orchestra with the well known Dr. Herbert Horn, principal accom panist, on the harpsichord. Performances will be at 4 PM and 8 PM in the Cardinal Ballroom of the Pinehurst Hotel, which is making available a special buffet dinner from 6 PM on for those afternoon or evening attendees who wish to make an even more special day of it. The occasion will mark the first appearance of Mr. Engelson with MCCS. He assumed the post of Music Director last August, shortly after joining the faculty of St. Andrews College, Laurinburg. as chairman of the music department. Mr. Engelson came from Minneapolis, where he had a wide and successful experience as the conductor of advanced choral groups and teacher of music literature and voice. MCCS has been fortunate in having within its ranks many soloists of full or near professional calibre so that all eight of the Christmas Concert soloists are from within its ranks. Heard throughout the program will be Thea Engelson, mezzo-soprano, (wife of the Music Director), (Catherine Ewing, alto, Alison Lawrence-Smith, mezzo soprano. Susan Long, soprano, Connie McKoy, alto, Molly Mitchell, soprano, Elaine Sills, soprano, and John Watson, bass. In commenting on the program, Mr. Engelson stated: "I like a 'balanced' program, meaning usually four sets of music - in this case dissimilar, yet all relating to the Christmas season. For such a program arrangement. I also like to present as much of an historical perspective as possible; to cover a number of historical periods of choral music. "These considerations come to gether very nicely with interesting and often unfamiliar arrangements of fine music in our Christmas program. "The first section, titled 'Motets of the Early Masters' starts with HoJie Christus Natus Est. a magnificent example of five part contrapuntal harmony of the Renaissance period. Then follows a period of reflection and mysticism in O Magnum Mysterium. Con trasted with this, rough vigor and optimism are heard in The Shepherd's Carol. 'A Choral Masterwork' de scribes the second set and the principal offering of the concert. Vivaldi's Gloria. Solo parts are taken by Molly Mitchell, Elaine Sills. Thea Engelson, Connie McKoy and Katherine Ewing. "Possibly the most innovative part of the program is titled 'Music of Minnesota Composers'. Each arrangement has attracted critical acclaim and has its own style and flavor. Still. Still. Still is a German folk song; Out of the Orient Crystal Skies is old English; What Is This Wondrous Fragrant Air is a French carol and the familiar Angels We Have Heard on High is clothed in unfamiliar yet beautiful harmonics. "We call the last set "A Touch of England" because there is some thing of English charm in each selection. Vitality and joy abound in Christmas Day. interpreted by soloists Susan Long, Allison Lawrence-Smith and John Watson. While Rocking is really a Czechoslovakian carol, this ar rangement has an English flavor. The concert closes with the bright and stirring I Saw Three Ships - a fitting climax to a concert which we hope and expect will do justice to the greatness of the Christmas season." According to Dr. Joseph Currie, Vice President and ticket chair man, pre concert ticket sales through MCCS members have been exceptionally good this year. But there will still be tickets available at the door at $3.50 for adults and SI. 75 for students 18 and under. For further details about the optional buffet (for which reser vations are requested), call the hotel, 295-6811, ext. 34.
