Boys \ Girls 9 Varsities , Boys 'JV Hoke Cagers Defeat 71st In 3 All three Hoke High basketball squads won their games December I with 71st Highs teams on the Hoke court. The Boys' varsity took a 55-52 decision, the Hoke girls won 71-48, and the Junior Varsity won 59-49. Hoke plays South View Friday in the Hoke gym. In last week's varsity game, Greg Hollingsworth scored 26 points for the winners, the highest individual total of the contest. Seventy-First took a one-point lead just short of two minutes from Hoke Boys Union Pines handed Hoke High's boys' varsity its second loss in four games of the season 71 -63 but the Hoke girls won 60-50 Friday night in the Union Pines gym. The Hoke teams played Cape Fear Tuesday on the Cape Fear court. The Hoke J Vs didn't play Friday. In the boys' game, five Union Pines players scored 13 points or the end after trailing bv 10 Doints in the third period. But Hoke's Eldred Blue scored two points on free throws, then Preston Moore did the same, the latter with 20 seconds left. Seventy-First's athletes took four shots at the basket in attempts to score field goals before time ran out but none went in. The win was Hoke's second in the season's First three games. The girls' game's leading scorer was Barnes with 24 points for Hoke. The winners were ahead at halftime when the score was 31-23 and outscored Seventy-First in every period. The Hoke JV's efforts brought the second consecutive win of the season following the opening loss. The 71st JVs had the game's leading individual scorer. Virgil Snow with 29 points. The loss was Union Pines's second in three games. In first game, the All Stars defeated the House of Raeford 59-49. The game for the first three quarters of play was very close with the All Stars holding a four-point lead. All Stars leading scorers were G. Maynor 20, R. Maynor 12, D. Huff 9, R. Singletary 9, B. Leslie and A. McLaughlin threw in 2 each. Leading the House of Raeford were D. Revelts 14. R. McNeill 8. C. Hollingsworth Barbers defeated the Bullets 63-55 behind some hot shooting by K. McDonald 29. L. McDonald had 14, L. McBryde 9. J. McDonald 5, A. Haynes 4. and A. Thomas 2. Bullets were led by M. In the last game of the night, the Suns defeated the Mindblowers 58-55. It was a close game through out all four quarters. J. Rainey led the Suns with 25 points while J. Buie threw in 14. Bullets 0 2 Hunt Second In Run Paul Hunt, Hoke High cross country and track runner, placed second in the 19-and-under age division in the Bethel 10-km road race on Saturday. The race was held in Bethel and was part of the Bethel Marathon Road Races. Hunt also finished fourth over-all in a field of 213 runners. He completed the 6.2-mile course in 33:39 for an average of 5:22 per mile. Hunt will compete this weekend in the Lung Run 10K in Hartsville, SC. The Eagles took a 6-4 lead in the first quarter and played even the second quarter, taking a 2-point lead at half time, 12-10. Plagued with first-game jitters and poor passing, the Lady Eagles did better the second half: 10-4 in the third quarter and 10-6 in the fourth. The Eagles were lead by T. Hollingsworth and V. Southerland with 1 1 points each followed by D. Gupton with 6, J. Hunt 2, and T. Kelton with 2 points. Kelton did a fine job rebounding to aid the Eagles' victory. Hillcrest was lead by B. Griffin with 14 points. Sinclair, Brown and Reese each contributed 2 points each for Hillcrest.
