Choral Society Gives Pirates' In February | Southern Pines: Close on his very ' successful debut as Musical Di rector of Moore County Choral Society in their Christmas Concert last Sunday, Robert A. Engelson announced today that the MCCS Gala III presentation February 21 will be the "now more than ever | famous" Gilbert - Sullivan "Pirates of Penzance". Again the stage will be the Cardinal Ballroom of the Pinehurst Hotel and the format will be a brunch followed by the presentation. Mr. Engelson's announcement generated high interest in the area because, in a sense, it means bringing Broadway to the Sand hills. On December 31, 1979 , "Pirates" opened on Broadway and was immediately a smash hit, still playing to full houses. Reached at his office as chair Hospital News MOORE MEMORIAL M.V. K\ Rosa Morrison presented a i. ceramic Christmas tree to the public library from the depart L ment. man of the music department at St. Andrews College, Laurinburg, Mr. Engelson commented: "Gilbert and Sullivan has been a music world of its own for over a century. 'Pirates of Penzance' was not the best known work of this super 19th century composer - librettist team ilntil perhaps the Broadway revival - but, in the opinion of know ledgeable G. & S. buffs, it is equal to or better than other Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas both musically and in comic satire. "On February 21st we are going to do a concert version of 'Pirates', enhanced by enough costuming and staging to get everyone into the rollicking spirit of the thing. Sure, 'Pirates' can be characterized as delightful nonsense, but the music enthralls the listener with its beauty and robust charm and its comic fun is really great satire, very witty. "People everywhere know and sing tunes from 'Pirates', often without realizing their origin. A good example is the most famous of all patter songs, 'I am the Very Model of a Modern Major Gen eral'. Then, so beautiful that it is often mistaken for an operatic aria is the lovely 'Poor Wandering One'. And for comic satire, 'The Police man's Lot is Not a Happy one' simply can not be surpassed. "I was very pleased with the performance of the MCCS chorus of eighty and eight soloists in our Christmas Concert. Although all four sections did well and are very talented, we have somewhat of a numerical overbalance of sopranos. Therefore 1 would urge that any basses, tenors or altos desirous of joining us for 'Pirates' and our spring concert come forward. They will be most welcome." On that subject. Col. Martin Foster, Membership Chairman, pointed out: "Candidates should present themselves at or next rehearsal at 7:15 PM, Brownson Memorial Church, May Street, Southern Pines. The only qualifi cation is some previous group singing experience. Dues are $15. for the balance of the concert season. If more information is desired, just call me at 692-6201."
