?Highlights Of 1981 In Hoke County Here are the highlights of 1981 in Hoke County, taken from news stories published in The News Journal during the year. ^ JANUARY Christmas 1980 sales were "good" to "terrific," Raeford merchants reported in the new year's first edition of The News Journal. The same paper also reported the Hoke County commissioners voted to buy land for a site of a new, additional building for county gov ^ernment offices. The site is The McLauchlin Co. property facing on East Elwood and East Edin borough avenues and across Edin borough from the Sheriffs De partment and county jail. The county offices in the new building will be almost directly across Edinborough from the Courthouse Annex, which houses the offices of the tax collector and supervisor, county manager, and the commissioners' conference room. Randy Huggins has left Southern National Bank's office in Raeford to rejoin the bank's Southern Pines start as an assistant vice president and administrative officer. Tom Jones is returning to Hoke County High School as head foot ball coach, from his job as athletics director of Scotland High. He succeeds Glenn Draughon. Raeford will file a pre-appli cation for a S500.000 U.S. De partment of Housing and Urban Development grant to help pay for the planned downtown revitali zation. The county entered 1981 eight to 12 inches short of normal in rainfall. The total for all of 1980 was 48 inches. The Hoke County Board of Education has applied to the Raeford Zoning Board of Adjust ment for a zoning variance to allow the school board s house on Harris Avenue to be converted to addi tional offices. It has been used as a residence for Hoke High principals. The county commissioners have pledged their support of the County Parks and Recreation Commission to pursue the donation of land offered verbally by Burlington In dustries here. The temperature dropped to 5 degrees in Raeford early January 5. The following day the lowest read ing was 15. The State Board of Trans portation at its January 9 meeting allocated Hoke County $19,008 for improvements to secondary roads in 1981. In their first basketball games of the new year, the Hoke High boys' varsity lost to Bvrd's. 63-53. but the Hoke girls and the Junior Varsity downed their Byrd opponents. The girls' score was 46-41. and the JVs ?45-24. The games were plavcd at Hoke High. The unbeaten Upchurch Junior High boys' cage team won its seventh ot the season, downing Anson. 49-26, on the Upchurch court. Hoke County senior citizens are now allowed to lunch in three of the county schools. federal funds to help pay for building a new National Guard Armory in Raeford will become available by mid-February, Hoke County officials have been in formed.
