Special Olympics A While Christmas is over for the P'rest of the world, it has just begun f for N.C. Special Olympics, f More than 1 .000 North Carolina grocery and drug chains will team up with Procter & Gamble, Inc.. and Governor James B. Hunt to bring the joy of Special Olympics to thousands of mentally retarded citizens in this state. During the last week of De ^ cember and the first week of w January, 45 million American homes well receive cents-off cou pons through the Publishers Clear ing House mailing service. The package, featuring 14 Procter & Gamble products, also contains a message urging public support for Special Olympics. Procter & Gamble will con tribute 5 cents to Special Olympics up to $500,000 nationally for every coupon redeemed by January 23. ? Half the funds collected in North , Carolina will go to N.C. Special Olympics and the remainder will benefit Special Olympics national ly ? The giant fund-raiser was kicked oft by Gov. Hunt's declaration of "Special Olympics Awareness Week." January 3 - 9, and an NBC movie, "The Kid from Nowhere", which tells the story of Special fc- Olympics, on January 4. "The grocery and drug store chains are playing a major role in this project and their response has been unbelievable", said Alan Bolick, State Special Olympics director. "While almost everyone is featuring the 14 Procter & Gamble cents-off coupons, a great many of the chains are going all-out with posters, shelf displays, door stickers, newspaper ads, and even ^ employee buttons supporting, ? Special Olympics." North Carolina chains sup porting the program are: Buy Rite, Shop Rite. Winn Dixie. Food Fare, Colonial-Big Star, Lowe's, Wil son's, Food Land. Byrd's, Harris Teeter. Fast Fare, IGA, Best Way, Food Rite, Clover Leaf, Piggly Wiggly. Parker's. Harris Super markets. Red & White. Shop-Eze. Kerr Drugs, Hill's Supermarkets, |A & P, and many others. "It is our hope that consumers will shop and redeem their coupons at stores that are supporting us in this program", Bolick said. But individuals can do more than just redeem their coupons. In many of the newspaper ads and in many stores' shelf displays. Proctor & Gamble "matching coupons" will appear. A shopper can simply include this coupon with a donation ^ to Special Olympics and it will be w matched up to 250.000 nationally by Proctor & Gamble. "The combined efforts of this campaign will help North Carolina citizens understand what Special Olympics is all about -- an op portunity for mentally retarded citizens to grow through achieve ments in athletic training and competition", Bolick said. N.C. Special Olympics is a J year-round program of sports train ing and athletic competition serv ing almost 24.000 mentally re tarded children and adults in North Carolina. There are 90 local programs serving 100 counties. For more information on how you can support Special Olympics, ."all (919) 787-6714 or write N.C. Special Olympics. P.O. Box 30191. _ Raleigh. We urge our readers to carefully consider their investment and if you have doubt re garding the offer, to inves tigate carefully. In Morton Kelsey's book. The Other Side of Silence (Paulist Press, 1976), there is a story about a man who wanted to grow in spiritual depth. Under the guid ance of a teacher, he made great progress. Then, however, the teacher had to be away for six months and it was a half-year later that he once again encountered his former pupil. Asked how he was doing in his spiritual life, the former pupil replied that he stopp ed all religious practices and did not intend to resume. To the astonished teacher's "Why?" he replied, "I saw a little light and I didn't like it." Concludes Kelsey, "The light made too many de mands on him." That is precisely what it means when we speak of Jesus as "The light of the world." That light came into our world, as John puts it, to "enlighten" all of us, to help us to see things as they really are and are meant to be. But the light is more than a comfort, it is also a challenge. As Kelsey put it, it makes demands upon us! It calls something from us. And if we are not willing to give it, we begin to prefer the darkness where we can hide As John says, "For everyone who does evil, hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed" (3:20). No it is not far-fetched for me to suggest that some of us prefer the darkness to light. "And this is the judgment," wrote John, "that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil" (3:19). All of us are glad that there are some aspects of our lives that are not out in the open for everyone to see. There are some thoughts, actions, and atitudes we are glad to keep a secret within us. At the same time, we realize that with God there is nothing that is hidden. He knows our most detestable thoughts, our deepest temptations, and our ac tions that never come to the attention of others. Therefore, some will regard the Light of the World as an unwel come intrusion in their lives. Yet, fearful as it is to be so completely known by God, isn't it also comforting and reassuring? God knows both the worst and the best about us and he loves us nonethe less. There is nothing in our lives that is truly hidden from him. But isn't it good to have at least someone from whom we do not have to hide the truth? Instead of fearing and trying to escape the Light into our lives, we can welcome it, knowing that it is by the power of that Light that we are freed of darkness, that we no longer have to carry secret burdens. Jesus himself promised, "1 have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness." IttdCroM. | The Good Neighbor.
