[Hamlet Ends Streak
The Upchurch Junior High
School boys' basketball winning
streak was ended at 43 games
recently by Hamlet in a game that
went through two overtime periods.
The final score was 52-50. The
winning record had covered four
seasons.
"I'm glad the winning streak is
over," upchurch Coach Stanley
Callender, said. "It's a lot to expect
of a Junior High player to keep a
streak like that going. It's good to
lose a game or two at that level to
give the players an incentive to
work hard to improve themselves.
"The game was acutally won at
the free-throw line. We made 8 out
I of 11 free throws. They made 12 out
of 21."
Hamlet eked out a 5-point lead
in the first quarter that kept the
Eagles playing catch-up till the end
of the third period for a 32-32
, score. The regulation game ended
at 42-42. Ricky Chavis made two
free throws with six seconds lef* ,n
send the game into the sect
overtime. Hamlet scored with
seconds left in the second overt
for the win.
Scoring for Upchurch were Ron
nie Melvin 25, Marcus Graham 15,
