Unbeaten Lumberton A Victim Unbeaten Hoke Frosh Win 2 More The Hoke High School Ninth Grade girls' basketball team went up against a powerful Lumberton team Thursday and came away with a 55-53 victory. Both teams were undefeated going into the contest. The game was nip and tuck all the way to the finish. The lead changed hands several times before the Hoke girls were able to pull it out at the last minute. With about four minutes left in the game, Hoke was ahead by two; then in the next minute and a half [Hamlet Ends Streak The Upchurch Junior High School boys' basketball winning streak was ended at 43 games recently by Hamlet in a game that went through two overtime periods. The final score was 52-50. The winning record had covered four seasons. "I'm glad the winning streak is over," upchurch Coach Stanley Callender, said. "It's a lot to expect of a Junior High player to keep a streak like that going. It's good to lose a game or two at that level to give the players an incentive to work hard to improve themselves. "The game was acutally won at the free-throw line. We made 8 out I of 11 free throws. They made 12 out of 21." Hamlet eked out a 5-point lead in the first quarter that kept the Eagles playing catch-up till the end of the third period for a 32-32 , score. The regulation game ended at 42-42. Ricky Chavis made two free throws with six seconds lef* ,n send the game into the sect overtime. Hamlet scored with seconds left in the second overt for the win. The leading scorers for Hoke were Sheila Southerland with 32 and Dela Pridgen with 24. Miss Pridgen also got 10 rebounds. Annie Mc Millian led all girls in rebounds with 13 grabs. She scored two points, also. The next game is scheduled for Thursday against Scotland at Hoke. The Hoke girls are still in the driver's seat in the conference.
