THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR
NOT TESTING SOILS
Farmers today need to utilize
eve|7thing available to them to
maintain that competitive edge in
~ crop production. As fertilizer costs
f continue to increase they should
evaluate their fertilization schemes
very carefully. This includes sam
pling the soils of each field annually
to determine needed adjustments
and actual elemental needs for
efficient and optimum crop pro
duction.
Soli testing in North Carolina is
free to all residents. Several states
which provide soil testing assess
charges for this scrvice. Other
f states do not even have soil testing
available. An article in the Novem
ber 28, 1981 issue of The Produce
News announced that the Washing
ton State University Soil Testing
Laboratory was closing. The elimi
nation of this 30 year old service
was necessitated by recent state
budget crises. Those desiring soil
testing in Washington in the future
must rely on commercial soil
^ testing firms or the University of
Idaho's Soil Testing Laboratories.
There is no excuse for not testing
soils in North Carolina. Any of you
(farmers, gardeners, persons main
taining home lawns) who are not
taking full advantage of this free
service are probably not using your
fertilizer dollars as effectively as
you could. In other words you may
be wasting money unnecessarily.

SIGNING A CONTRACT
Whether you sign a contract for a
house or a set of encyclopedias,
remember that piece of paper is a
legal document. Under certain
circumstances, vou can cancel. But
in most cases, you're bound by the
provision of the contract. So you
should ask some questions before
signing your name on the dotted
line.
Do you understand everything
the contract says? Do you agree
with everything the contract says?
Is every blank in the contract filled
in with information? Did you read
the fine print?
If you answered "No" to any of
these questions, do not sign. Get
some help from a lawyer, the state
attorney general's office or your
local extension office.
? Remember, signing a contract is
J serious business.
