Turlington Students Give "The Best Year' "The Best Year" was the title of the play presented last Friday to the Sixth Grade student body by Mrs. Beverly Bowden's homeroom stu dents at J.W. Turlington Elemen tary School. The play, written by Mildred Hark and Noel McQueen, vividly captured the importance of begin ning the new year with a positive and assertive attitude. The 33-member cast held the audience spellbound with a per formance pulsating energy, enthu siasm, and expressiveness. In addition to the play, the talented group of boys and girls further electrified spectators with a heartwarming commemoration of the January 15 birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This recognition, consisting of poetry and prose recitations by Tammy West, Dorchelle Hurst, and Chris topher Clark, was brought to a stirring and momentous conclusion with Brietta Smith's dramatic in terpretation of Dr. King's immortal speech. "I Have A Dream." The musical talents of Mrs. Betty Upchurch, reading teacher, further enhanced the program while serv ing as a melodious vehicle which transported the program's mood and spirit in gracious style and ease. The observance of Dr. King's birthday also "kicked off' the school's upcoming celebration of National Brotherhood Month and Black History Week during the month of February. Mrs. Jeanette Watson, chairman of the Black History Committee at Turlington reveals a few of the scheduled activities: "The children will have an opportunity to observe audio-visual presentations of famous Black Americans, participate in an essay contest detailing the importance of Black history, and display their V *4 V V) liv *<* The members of the cast after giving their performance.
