" O.D. Patients Need Help |; After Emergency b> Patricia Cain Public Information Coordinator Sandhills Center Of all patients treated in hospital emergency rooms for overdose of sedative hypnotic drugs, nearly one-half have been admitted at least once before for the same problem. This was among the findings of a recent study funded by the National institute of Drug Abuse which examined the types of drugs used, reasons for use. sources of drugs, and prior treatment experiences of drug overdose victims. Data was gathered on 494 drug overdose patinets in various hospitals. The study showed that many of the patients had misused drugs several times before overdosing. More than 4"* percent of the victims reported at least one prior over dose: 22. b percent three or more. Health problems were found in many of the cases, with b2.3 percent having received medical treatment for acute or chronic illness within the preceding 12 months. Another significant factor in cases of sedative hypnotic drug overdose cases was the use of alcohol. C. HOURS: 10 - 7 SUNDAY 1 ? 6 1 patients reported drinking at the time of their overdosing. Cause of overdose was divided into three main catagories: (1) A suicide attempt was the reason given for the overdose in over a third of the cases. Most of the patients who reported suicide as the motive for overdose were also dependent on drugs. Suicide pa tients had a high incidence of prior admission with more than one-half reporting at least one prior over dose: one-fourth reporting three or more. (2) Pleasure-seeking accounted for more than one-fourth of the cases of overdose with over one-half having reported at least one prior overdose. (3) Self-medication, a significant ' number reported having used pre scription drugs daily for a year or more; one-third had had previous overdose admissions. Most of the repeat patients were not receiving help from mental health. drug-abuse, or alcohol treatment programs. The results of this study indicate a definite need for directing emergency-room over dose patients into long-term care to reduce the risk of their becoming drug overdose repeaters. if you know someone who needs help in dealing with a drug misuse problem or desire more informa tion, contact Sandhills Center at (919) 875-8156. iL M Delia McNeill [left] and Mazelle Connell. {Staff photo.) |) Heart Month Activities F or Hoke Announced Miss Emma Minis, fund-raising chairman for the Hoke County Heart Association, and Mrs. Delia McNeill, city chairman of the 1982 Heart Fund campaign, have an nounced Heart Month activities and events which will help the Heart Association reach its 1982 Heart Fund Campaign goal of S6.125. Symposium Scheduled The first step towards creating a network of communication for wives of servicemen here will take place at the Irwin Junior High School at Ft. Bragg, March 20. The first Ft. Bragg Army Sym posium. which will consist of the commanders' and first-sergeants' wives, was announced at a meeting in the Sink Room of the main post Officers Open Mess January 19. The 325th wives that will attend the symposium will later be ex pected to set up smaller networks among the wives of the soldiers within their husbands' units. "A deep void in the old fashioned back yard fence' type of network among wives in smaller groups has led to the symposium," said Jewell Waddell. Fort Bragg's installation volunteer coordinator. During the symposium, trained facilitators will help conduct small workshops that will deal with communication techniques, pro blems that Army wives and ways to solve these problems. "If the unit leaves for a 'hot spot' within 24 hours, who will be the support system for the 16-year-old new mother in the trailer park 14 miles from Fort Bragg, who doesn't drive a car. is unaward that she can shop in the post exchange or Commissary and doesn't even have | an identification card. Who will call her?" asked Waddell, the volunteer coordinator. This is the type of problem that the family symposium hopes to eliminate, she added. The symposium, which is one of the first of its kind, is a direct result of the Army Family Symposium that is held annually in the Washington, D.C. area. 1 A forerunner to the Ft. Bragg symposium, the Army Family Symposium, which consists of dele gates from Army posts throughout the world, was created in 1980 to help identify and find solutions to problems facing the Army family, according to Waddell. Speaking from her office in Washington, D.C., Jane Surles, a co-chairperson for last year's Army Family Symposium, said that she * was "very excited" about Fort Bragg's symposium.
