Melissa Brock, second; Martha Baldwin, third; and Twana Bridges, fourth. The subject was "The Importance of Having Black History Week." Here are their essays. by Susan Ragsdale 1 feel that knowing of the historical back ground of all people is needed in trying to understand our fellowman. Black people are a very important part of our society today. i Black history is most interesting from as tar back as their heritage in Africa, to their courage shown in the face of harsh and unfair treatment in bringing them to a world that was strange and new to them as slaves. Their determina tion to obtain their rightful part of our country should be recognized by everyone. I feel that this week should be set aside for us to appreciate all of the great black leaders that have made the black race what it is today ? a powerful part of our society, na tion, and world. by Melissa Brock The Importance of Black History Week is to emphasize the contribu tions that many Blacks have made to our American History. I would like to share some of these contri butions. Martin Luther King Jr. was very important to the freedom of the Blacks. He was black and fought bravely for Blacks' rights knowing that someday he might have to give up his }ife for his belief. Mr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. He died from k gun shot wound. Another contributor was Harriet Ross Tubman. She lived in the years 1821-1913. She was often called "General Tubman." "Gen eral Tubman" was a slave girl who dreamed of being tree. One day Harriet decided to run away. After she left, she disguised herself and came back to free others. Some people would not go with her. so she convinced them to go by showing a small pistol. She was never caught because she was too bright. Harriet Tubman earned a place upon American heroines early in her life. She received a military funeral at her death. Mahalia Jackson. Marian An derson. Harry Belafonte. and Lena Home were outstanding Black singers. Lena Home was listed among the six best actresses in Hollywood. Mahalia Jackson was a well-known Gospel singer. She gave a performance at Carnegie Hall, as well as for the President of the United States of America. Also, she gave a concert for Martin Luther King Jr. during the famous march on Washington. Marian Anderson sang at Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday in 1939. She was chosen by our government for a representative of American life and BEST POSTERS ? Sealed, left. Also, she was a U.S. delegate to the Onited Nations. Harry Belafonte was a folk singer. He supported the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recenty he was in Atlanta, and he participated in a Memorial Service honoring Mr King. Today we have found that the Black race has made contributions to our history and have helped us to realize the worth to all people whatever their race. by Martha Baldwin Martin Luther King was a man of his word and a man of freedom. He spoke what he thought. He did not treat anyone unkind. He tried to treat everyone alike. He fought for what he wanted, even when it was hard. Mainly he fought for the people. He wanted all people Black, White and Indian to live together peacefully. Before Martin Luther King died, he said. "Free at last," Thank God, "Free at last." Most people wanted to fight or kill when Martin Luther King died. Some people called him Mr. King or King for short. He was a Black American with pride. I hope the people of America will never forget him. I know I will not! by Twana Bridges We celebrate Black History Week because there are important black people. Some helped Ameri ca to be successful.. People like Martin Luther King "helped the Blacks and White come together and let them know that Blacks and Whites are people. We celebrate civil right leaders like Roy Wilkins. He helped direct the fight for equal rights opportunities for black people. We celebrate black educa tors 4 too. One black educator is Robert R. Moton. Today, because of these successful people, we use a week to let them know that we really appreciate the hard work they have done for all of us. That is "The Importance of Black History Week." e News The following Hoke County stu dents have made the honor roll for the fall 1981 semester at North Carolina A&T State University. They are Judy D.
