4-H Traffic Safety Poster Contest
The Hoke County 4-H program
is conducting a 4-H Traffic Safety
Poster Contest. The contest is
designed to help youth learn about
traffic safety and give them a
chance to compete and to win
awards.
The contest is open to boys and
girls 9-12 years old. Participants
need to develop an idea about one
of the following subjects: Bicycle
Safety. Pedestrian Safety. Auto
motive Safety. Motorcycle Safety.
School Bus Safety, or Safety Belt
Usage. The posters should he done
on a piece of unlined 8' j-by-ll
inch paper, using words and pic
tures or drawings that show the
idea neatly. Participants should do

Richard Brian Lindsay, 12, was

rington said the boy had suffered a
self-inflicted pistol wound in his left
chest.
The funeral was conducted
Thursday afternoon in Galatia

Howard Loxley Pope. t>4. of 1401
Norene Circle. Garner, a native of
Hoke County, died Monday at
home.
At the outbreak of World War II
he was stationed in the Philippines.
He was taken prisoner on Bataan in
1942 and spend three years as a
prisoner of war of the Japanese.
Mr. Pope retired from military
service after 22 years of duty and
held the rank of sergeant major
when he was honorably discharged.
Then he worked 17 years as an
assistant warden in Central Prison
in Raleigh.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Annie Neal Sessoms. for
merly of Raeford; his sons. Pat
Pope of Raleigh. John Pope of
Boone. Stephen Pope of St.
Thomas Island in the Virgin Is
lands; his daughter. Mrs. Penny Jo
Kelly of Raleigh; his brothers. Jack
Pope of Raeford. Mike Pope of
Homestead, Fla.. Walter Pope of
Winder, Ga.; his sister. Mrs. Mary
Elizabeth Wadley of Pauls Valley.
Okla.; and a grandchild.
The funeral was planned for
Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Bryan-Lee
Funeral Home chapel in Garner.
Masonic rites were to be held at the
graveside in Montlawn Cemetery.
