Mikki Freeze In Model
Congress
Mikki Freeze, a Hoke County
High School senior, was among the
1 7 high school students who repre
sented North Carolina at the
Seventh annual Convention 11, a
model Congress which considered
bills to amend the U.S. Constitu
tion, held February 10-13 in Wash
ington, D.C.
Miss Freeze, daughter of Mrs.
Oleta Lopez, was among the appli
cants chosen to attend the session.
The North Carolinians were among
183 students from most of the 50
states who were chosen to parti
cipate.
Miss Freeze said Monday the
sessions were interesting and tun
but work. She said they ran from
about. 7:30 a.m. (ill 9:30 p.m.
daily, except for breaks for lunch
and dinner, and one research
period kept her and others up till 4
a.m. getting information for a bill.
She added that each bill to
amend the Constitution was de
bated pro and con. and that not a
single bill succeeded in getting
enacted. She said passage of a bill
has been rare in the previous six
sessions of the Convention. On the
other hand, she indicated, this
conforms with reality. The Con
stitution of the United Sates has
been amended only 25 times since
the Constitutional Convention of
I 787. Of the amendments, the first
12. making up the Bill of Rights,
were added between 1787 and the
final ratification in November 1 789
(at the second convention.)
