"Things That Matter"
by Lucien Coleman
Our church burned down the
other day. It was a huge blaze,
bringing three tire companies to the
scene. And I'll never forget the
superhuman effort those fire
fighters made to save at least a part
of our building and the houses
surrounding it.

tures were merciless. The windchill
factor was something like 50
degrees below zero. Water from the
fire hoses turned to ice as soon as it
touched trees and the ground
around the building. As the walls
cooled down, what was left of the
building looked like a huge ice
palace.
As firefighters played hoses on
the burning building, the heavy
wind caught the water and blew the
freezing spray into their faces. Two
firemen were hospitalized with
frostbite. They stayed there nearly
all day, until the last smoldering
embers were out.
Two of the units were volunteer
fire companies. The men from
these companies, along with the
professionals from the Louisville
fire department, fought the blaze
as though it was threatening their
own homes. The volunteer fire
fighters did the hard, dirty,
dangerous jpb without pay and with
little glory.
1 thought about how many
volunteer fire departments there
must be all over the country, in
towns and small cities from coast to
coast, manned by school teachers,
clerks, service station operators,
ministers -? men and women from
every walk of life. We owe them an
enormous debt of gratitude. We
hear the sirens from time to time;
but we little realize what they do
until a fire comes close to home.
According to statistics from the
International Association of Fire
Fighters, 70 firefighters died and
more than 45,000 were injured in
the line of duty in 1979. Undoubt
edly. statistics from volunteer fire
companies would swell these
figures even more. God only knows
how much pain and suffering is
hidden in these statistics.
Later, it was revealed that our
church had been burned down by
two young arsonists. 1 can't
imagine what kind of mentality
would burn down a place of
worship, just for kicks, putting
lives in jeopardy and destroying a
thousand sacred memories. They
gave us a glimpse of the seamier
side of human nature.
But. then, those firefighters
showed us the brighter side. What
they did on that cold Sunday
morning bordered on heroism.
They, and their counterparts in fire
departments all over the country,
deserve a vote of gratitude from all
of us.
