A Hoke United Fund Agency
4-H Is For City, Town Kids, Too
The Hoke County 4-H program
^is among those which receive help
"from the Hoke County United
Fund, whose United Way cam
paign is underway.
The following article describes
the 4-H service.
What is 4-H? According to Alice
Lancaster 4-H agent, a lot of people
still think that it is just for farm
kids. But today's program is for
rural and urban youth ages 9-19
from all backgrounds. 4-H'ers get
pinto just about everything that has
to do with learning.
"4-H - Pathways to the Future",
the national theme, reflects the
basic mission of 4-H -- to help
youth become self-directing, pro
ductive. and contributing members
of society. 4-H emphasizes social
responsibility and promotes family
involvement.
4-H reaches youth in a variety of
ways. Youth can be members of
^organized community 4-H clubs,
which are usually associated with a
certain area, such as the Hillcrest
4-H Club or Rockfish 4-H club.
Membershfp may range from 8 or 9
to 20 or 25. The club meets
regularly, elects officers, and has
an educational program at each
meeting. The members enroll in
projects according to their in
terests.
) Another way that 4-H reaches
youth is through special interest
groups, which are special intensive
short term groups who get training
in one particular area. Examples
are special interest groups in
sewing, bicycle safety, foods,
photography, model rocketry, or
anything that youth are interested
in.
4-H also has special activities to
supplement the rest of the pro

gram. These include public speak
ing contest, Fashion Revues, talent
contests, tours, camps, and re
treats. These events are held on the
county, district and state levels.
4-H is an excellent program for
youth, but it doesn't happen by
itself, according to Alice Lancaster,
Hoke County 4-H agent. She says,
"It takes time, people, and re
sources. One reason that 4-H works
is the adults that work with it.
Volunteers are utilized to expand
the program, by serving as leaders
of community clubs, teachers of
special interest programs, and
resource persons for special acti
vities. They give valuable services to
the youth of Hoke County, and to
the community by freely sharing
their time, talents and resources
through 4-H." In addition, they
help youth use their skills to
contribute to community de
velopment through such projects as
beautification, work with elderly
and low income, energy con
servation and crime prevention.
4-H, America's largest out - of -
school program for boys and girls,
is the youth program of the
Agricultural Extension Service.
Alice Lancaster is the 4-H ex
tension agent in Hoke County who
coordinates the program, activities,
and volunteers. She says that local
support received from United Way
is very important to provide pro
grams and activities, and much of
the money is used to provide
scholarships to youth who par
ticipate in projects and activities.
These scholarships can be used by
the youth for any 4-H educational
activity such as retreats, 4-H camp,
and 4-H Congress. Awards are
given to provide incentives for
youth to participate in public
speaking contests, talent shows,
demonstrations, fashion revues,
and other activities. 4-H also offers
advancement to district, state, and
national competition.
Some of the money from United
Way is used to provide recognition
to volunteer leaders and to help
defray expenses of adults who
participate in training workshops
and who provide leadership for
Hoke County youth at district and
state activities.
Today, as never before, activities
are needed which can stimulate,
motivate, guide, enthuse, and give
meaning to ideals of youth. 4-H can
be that strong and positive force.

contact the 4-H office at 875-2162.
