Farm Focus by Richard Mellon Extension Livestock Agent Banks Wannamaker Extension Field Crops Agent LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT Feed efficiency is swine oper ations can be very costly to pro ducers. While a great deal of work has been done on improving feed efficiency through genetics, there is something each producer can do on their own operation. That is. adjust self feeders so as to eliminate or at least minimize feed wastage. Swine researchers have found that a wastage rate of 10 percent can not be visibly observed. However, if such a wastage rate existed on a farm and the producer was using 648 tons of feed annually, then over 64 tons would be wasted annually. Assuming a cost of SlbO per ton for a simple corn-supplement ration the cost of that wastage to the producer would be about $10,300. In these times of low returns to swine producer such a loss could make the difference between losing money or breaking even. Management ideas for beef pro ducers in March are: 1 . Plan spring pasture anage ment and fertilization to maximize forage yields and quality. 2. Make sure cows and calves are identified. 3. Keep the protein and energy levels for lactating cows high enough for them to carry calves until spring grazing begins. 4. Do any necessary work on calves at an early age. preferably by 30 days of age. SUGGESTIONS FOR SOYBEAN GROWERS: Extemely low market prices are making us all aware of trying to cut costs in order to make a profit. I recently came across suggestions for living with low profit prospects of 1982 soybeans. 1 . Plan to do better than average. 2. Farm one less field. 3. Avoid soybeans after soybeans whenever possible. * 4. Lime all fields calling for lime, even those rented for only one year. 5. Add all fertilizer called for on a soil test, but no more. 6. Try one or two new varieties. 7. Choose herbicides field by field. 8. Consider band or post-direct ed herbicide application. 9. Scout for insects, especially during late July through Septem ber. 10. Set a target price, write it down, show it to someone, and take it the first time it becomes avail able. 11. Visit one soybean test or demonstration during the summer. 12. Harvest all the soybeans you raise. SOYBEAN MARKET UPDATE: Soybean prices should stay in the f>.00 - 6.50 range in North Carolina markets. Prices will probably re cover from their depressed state which hit the market in early March. The extent of the recovery will depend on the amount of farmer sales and changes in the demand here and abroad. Brazil has begun harvesting soybeans and. their final crop size is slightly below estimated projection. North Carolina is expected to have an increase in acres planted by 9% and the U.S. overall will have a 2% increase in acres planted. Hoke Agricultural Extension News by Willie Featheratone, Jr. County Extension Chairman HOW TO BECOME A TREE FARMER Green signs with white letters that read "Tree Farm" are quite common in the rural areas of North Carolina. In fact, there are over 1.700 of them in the state. You'll find them on land owned by Governor James B. Hunt. Jr.. Actor Andy Griffith, entrepreneur Tommie Upchurch, and many other prominent citizens. - Tree farm signs are always posted on woodland that is at tractive and productive. It is ob vious that the owner takes pride in growing trees. The tree farm program is spon sored by the North Carolina Forestry Industry Association in cooperation with the Southern Forest Institute to give public recognition to private timberland owners who are doing an out standing job of managing their forestlands. The minimum size forest area to be considered is usually 10 acres. Trees must be harvested in a manner that assures a continuous production of timber crops. Idle acres must be planted. Trees must be protected from fire and destruc tive pests. If you would like to become an official tree farmer, here is how. Each county has a tree farm coordinator. In Hoke County the tree farm coordinator is Robert Jones. County Forest Ranger. You may contact him by calling 875 2808. Tell Mr. Jones that you are interested in becoming a tree farmer. He will either inspect your woodland or make arrangements for another professional forester to inspect your woodland. There is no charge for this inspection. If you are carrying out the required management practices, you will be certified as a tree farmer. To keep this title you'll have to be inspected again every 5 years. As a certified tree farmer, you will be eligible for state, regional and national awards. You will receive the green and white tree farm sign and a framed certificate. You'll also get an informative quarterly magazine, plus a colorful publication from the American Forest Institute. But, probably, the most beneficial aspect of being a certified tree farmer is the contact you will have with professional foresters, people who will help you to do an even better job of managing your woodland. For more information on the tree farm program, contact your county Agricultural Extension office.
