Area Incidents Welders, Tools ' Worth $2,500 Stolen The following were reported to the Raeford Police Department recently, Police Chief Leonard Wiggins said. Someone stole a $90 bicycle March 17 from its parking place at McLauchlin School. The owner is ? Herman Douglas of Rt. 3, Box 221 -A, Raeford. Three batteries were stolen Sat urday from two cars and a truck all on West Donaldson Avenue but were recovered and returned to their owners. Batteries were taken from a 1968 Dodge auto and a 1967 Ford pickup truck at the home of Louise Cameron, 406 W. Donald son Ave., and from a 1973 Ply mouth at the home of Milton a Campbell, 411 W. Donaldson. ^ They were found under a tree at the back edge of Mrs. Cameron's yard. The Cameron batteries were worth $50 each, and Campbell's $80. Someone broke into a shop at Hoke County High School and stole two welders and some tools valued at a total $2,500. The theft was discovered Friday morning. Five screens and a window pane at Gibson Cafeteria at the high school were found destroyed Tues day morning. The damage was estimated at $75 but nothing was reported missing. The damage was dis covered by a custodian, Ernest Little. The Hoke County Sheriff s De partment received the following. A man shot into a car occupied by Cleveland Tew. Rt. 3, Raeford, early March 13 after pulling a woman out of it and ordering Tew to open a door. The man, using a hand gun, also pointed the gun at Tew, then left in another car. The incident occurred at the Chapter One Club. Someone poured an inflammable liquid, apparently kerosene, on the driver's seat of a car owned by Steven Gordon Sullivan. Rt. 1, Red Springs, then ignited it. The fire was discovered at 12:22 a.m. Thursday. Biven Earl Williams, 838 Green St., Raeford, reported March 13 someone smashed the windshield of his car while it was parked. The damage amounted to about $200. Ronnie Ray, Rt. 2, Raeford, was stabbed in the back March 13 and was treated at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. A suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Two orange beacon lights worth SI 75 each were stolen between March 1 1 and 14 from the top of a wrecker truck at Arabia Auto Repair. Wanda Clark, Rt. 11, Fayette ville, reported that after she brought a man to his home, he drove her car away. Evelyn Parker reported someone broke into her home on Rt. 4, Raeford. March 14 or 15 and stole three cassette players worth $869.97. Someone stole $500 worth of jewelry and other personal property from the home of Stephen Joel Seagroves, Rt. 3. Raeford. in Timberland. March 15 after break ing into the residence. 'Br as well Appeals Court Candidate E. Maurice Braswell of Fayette ville has announced his candidacy for Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals to fill the vacancy of Edward B. Clark's seat. ^ For the past 19 years, Braswell, 59, has been a Superior Court judge. He is currently senior resi dent judge of the 12th Judicial District (Cumberland and Hoke counties). As of April 1, 1982. Braswell becomes Dean of the state's Superior Court judges in seniority, following the retirement of Judge George Fountain. Although he has been primarily assigned to the counties of the 2nd Judicial Division. Judge Braswell has held court in approximately 50 counties from the mountains to the coast. This experience has covered all phases of criminal and civil cases as well as numerous adminis trative matters. A graduate of the Law School of UNC at Chapel Hill in 1950, Braswell graduated from the National Judicial College at ^Boulder. Colo., in 1966. He has P worked in private law practice and was appointed district attorney in the old 9th District by Gov. Luther Hodges in 1955. He was re-elected to that post for two more terms. Braswell is currently serving his third elccted eight -year term as a Superior Court |udge. Since 1964 Braswell has been engaged in judicial writing as a member of the Pattern Jury In struction Committee and is co author of three volumes of pattern jury instructions. He is also co author of the Judges Bench Book and has written law review articles on jury voir dire and objections. With Dr. Elmer Oettinger he co-authored in 1972 two booklets of fables for children, in the nature of Aesop, which were published by the Governor's Crime Commission and issued to public schools by the State Department of Public Instruction. During World War II Braswell served in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner on a B- 1 7 on 41 combat missions out of Italy. Shot down three times, he was a prisoner of war for two months in Bucharest. Koumania. While he was born in Rocky Mount, Edgecomb County, and graduated from high school there in 1941, Braswell has made his home in Fayetteville since 1950, and is married to the former Ruth Cox of Greene County. For his campaign treasurer. Judge Braswell has appointed Jerome B. Clark, Jr.. of the law firm of Clark, Shaw, Clark and Bartelt in Fayetteville. Clark is counselor of the North Carolina State Bar. ?Levitz Won't Try For Heilig-Meyers Merger Levitz Furniture and Heilig Meyers Company announced today that Levitz has informed Heilig Meyers that Levitz has decided not to pursue the previously announced acquisition of Heilig-Mevers by , Levitz. Robert Elliott, president of Le vitz.. stated that in view of current general economic conditions unre lated to Heilig-Mevers. Levitz does not feel that consummation of the acquisition would be in its best interests at this time. Levitz Furniture Corp. is a national furniture retailer with 76 stores in 2b states. Net sales were about $488 million for the fiscal year ended January 31. 1982. Heilig -Meyers operates 81 retail home furnishing stores in Virginia. West Virginia. North Carolina and South Carolina.
