TO PERFORM HERE ?? Touch, the Mime Trio, will be among the performers during the Hoke County Celebration of the Arts '82 Art Festival. Touch s mime style emphasizes the wide range of human qualities. The group is based in the Research Triangle area. The Hoke County groups which will perform include, in addition to those mentioned previously, the Hoke High Chorus and Chorale, Upchurch Junior High Drama Club, and Upchurch Dance Club. Hefner was elected to the 94th ; Congress on November 4. 1974, ! after spending more than 20 years ? in the entertainment and radio : business. He has won re-election to the House in each successive ballot ing in the Eighth District. During his first term in Con gress. Hefner served on the Inter state and Foreign Commerce Com mittee. In 1976 he left that committee to become a member of the Public Works and Transporta tion Committee. He was a member of its Subcommittee on Aviation. Surface Transportation and the Investigations and Review Subcom mittee. Hefner served on the Veterans' Affairs Committee during his first three terms in the House. At the beginning of the 96th Congress in 1979. he was elected chairman of the Subcommittee on Education, Training and Employment. He also served on the Subcommittee on Medical Facilities and Benefits. He was elected House majority zone whip in 1977 during the 95th Congress. In that capacity he worked for two years with the assistant majority leader in helping advise the Democratic Party's leadership on legislative strategies. At the beginning of the 96th Congress in 1979, Hefner was elected to serve on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, tl\e top level legislative policy-making organization for the Democratic Party in the House of Representa tives. He represents Democratic congressmen from North Carolina, South Carolina. Georgia and Ten nessee. He is continuing to work in that capacity during the 97th Congress. In 1980. Hefner was selected to serve on the House Appropriations Committee. During the 9/th Con gress. he is a member of the Defense Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Military Con struction. Early in 1981 he was chosen to serve on the House Budget Com mittee, which sets spending priori ties for all federal agencies. Hefner is a member of the steering committee of the Congres sional Textile Caucus, which was formed in 1978 as an outgrowth of the House Informal Textile Com mittee on which Hefner served for four years. During his career as an enter tainer, Hefner sang with the Har vesters Quartet which appeared in concerts throughout the country. He is the owner of WRKB Radio in Kannapolis. Hefner was born on April 1 1 , 1930, in Elora, Tenn., and grew up in Alabama. He moved to North Carolina as a young man. He is married to the former Miss Nancy Hill, a native of Gadsden, Ala., and they have two daughters; Stacye, born on June 22, 1959, and Shelly, born on September 6. 1962. Hefner and his family are mem bers of North Kannapolis Baptist Church. Hoke Swingers In Festival The Hoke County Swingers are performing for the Arts Festival on Sunday, April 4, at 2 and 4:15 at J.W. Turlington School. \ Also performing are Derby 'Oof lies of West End. Ed Shepley will be calling the tips for this per formance. The Swingers were established in Raeford in 1967 - 68. The club's dance hall is above Howell Drug on Main Street. Leo Salzer, president, Thomas Macko, vice president, and Johnny Ramsey, treasurer, are the elected officers for 1981 - 82. Com munion Service will be observed at 7:30 in the Education Building. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Revival Services was held at the Presbyterian Church March 22 - 26. The guest speaker was Dr. Robert Sloop of Lumberton. This Revival was sponsored jointly by the Lumber Bridge and Rex Pres byterian churches. Mrs. Clinton Jackson visited her sister and brother, Mrs. Robert Owens of Roseboro and Rev. Thomas N. Cooper in Clinton last Sunday. Mrs. John Covington and Miss Mary Monroe Maxwell were in Raleigh last weekend visiting Mrs. Jon Evans and daughters, Allison and Susan. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Norflinger, Mary Katherine and Elizabeth Ann of Richmond, Va. spent several days, recently with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. McGougan. Mrs. Ruth Tolar visited her sister, Mrs. Margaret Quick in Raeford last Sunday evening. Mrs. Elsie Patterson of Fay etteville spent Sunday evening with Misses Lib and Lois Sumner. Mrs. Don Hindman and daugh ter, Ann'emarie of Myersville, Md. are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Horton. Mrs. Slyvia Lieben of Tucson, Arizona arrived Saturday to spend some time with her daughter and son - in - law. Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Beck. Dixie Bennett Jackson has been accepted for admission to Camp bell University as a freshman this coming fall semester. Miss Jackson will be a graduate of Flora Mac donald Academy, and is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles William Jackson. MRS. MATTIE M. COVINGTON HONORED Mrs. Maggie M. Covington was honored with a retirement shower and dinner on March 18th at Chris' Steak House in Fayetteville by Professional Associates. Mrs. Covington, a registered nurse, was employed by Doctors Daniel, Garber and Morrison in Deaths And Funerals Mrs. Willie Mm Walker The funeral for Mrs. Willie Mae McPhaul Carthens Walker was conducted March 23 in Center Grove Church by the Rev. O. McPhatter. Burial was in the church cemetery. Buie Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Walker. 51, of Rt. 1, Red Springs, died March 18. Surviving are her parents. Willie and Rebecca McPhaul; two daugh ters, Mrs. Gloria Murchison of Raeford, and Miss Jerri Jean Walker of Washington. D.C.; three sons, Robert L. McPhaul of the home, Rowland Walker Jr. of Raeford, and Curtis Walker of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, Robert L. McPhaul of Raeford, Herman, John W., Dell C. and Harrison McPhaul, all of Wash ington; four sisters, Helen R. Monroe and Lula Burns of Rae ford, Mrs. Bobbie Woodland and Mrs. Rosa B. Stephens of Wash ington; and 10 grandchildren. Wilbur Lee Smith Wilbur Lee Smith died Tuesday morning. He was 76. The nmeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ephesus Bap tist Church by the Rev. Gifton O. Canipe. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elois B. Smith; his daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Harris and Mrs. Barbara Jones of Raeford; his brother, Leon Smith of Norfolk, Va.; his sister, Mrs. Louise Britt of Dublin; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. The family was to be at Crumpler Funeral Home Wednesday 7-9 p.m. Fayetteville for seventeen years. She has agreed to continue as pianist for her former office's Christmas parties and to substitute for nurses. Mrs. Covington is organist - emeritus of tne Lumber Bridge Presbyterian Church, pianist for the Sunday School, and a Life Member of the Women of the Church organization.
