5 Poetry Contests Open April 1
Five contests for the Poetry
Council of North Carolina, which
has for its aim discovering and
encouraging writing talent, espe
cially in poetry, will open on April I
and close on June 15.
The contest categories include
I he Oscar Arnold Young Memorial
Contest for the best book of poetry
with more than 20 pages, published
in 1981. by a writer who is. or has
A Review
been, a resident of North Carolina;
the Charles A. Shull for any
traditional form, except the sonnet,
and limited to 24 lines; the James
Larkin Pearson Contest, for free
verse and experimental forms and
limited to 22 lines; the Archibald
Rutledge Contest, only for sonnet
entries, with either Shakespearean
or Italian forms: the Virginia Dare
Contest, for young writers aged
'Desperate Lives':
Movie Of Drug Abuse

Death, destroyed minds, and
maimed bodies were subjects of a
movie with the soap "opery" title
"Desperate Lives" which was
CBS's movie March 3, a movie
which overdramatized teenage drug
abuse. Or did it?
Sandy and Scott Cameron
(Helen Hunt and Doug McKeon)
were two "pretty neat kids,"
bright, alert, excellent students,
fine athletes, devoted to each other,
their friends and family. They
possessed all those qualities that
one associates with a Boy Scout...
until they "got into drugs."
"Everyone does it" was their
standard response, and "I'm tired
of being Little Bo-Peep." w as Susie
Garber's (Tricia Cast). They
weren't seeking to gain social
acceptance or popularity because
they all were "in." accepted, before
Ihey became heavy users and Scott,
a pusher; so then why?
Scott was rebelling against
authority. We seem to accept and
expect rebellion. We're told it's just
part of growing up. but there is a
distinction between disagreement
and out and out rebellion. The
Camerons were neither negligent
nor overindulgent or possessed any
of those horrible qualities that
psychologists tell us drive adoles
cents away from their parents to
peers and pushers.
That is not to say that all was
idyllic at home. Yes. there were
problems particularly financial
ones, and "poor, old dad" often
had to work 16 hours a day so his
wife. Carol (Diane Ladd). could be
home with the kids. The Camerons
tried - they tried hard: yet some
where, somehow communications
broke down.
Scott's dialogue at home gen
erally went something like this:
"get off my case." "quit bugging
me." or "I can't handle it." Handle
what; being asked about school or
why he had given up football? Do
parents no longer have the rights to
inquire about their children's days
at school?
The main plot centered around
Hileen Phillips' (Diana Scarwid). a
voung guidance counselor's, dra
matic fight against the system to try
to save these and other young
people from destroying their lives.
Her picas met only deaf ears. She
was even warned not to cause
trouble it she valued her job. She
continued to face resistance and
indifference from parents and
authorities even after two girls met
violent deaths and both Sandy and
Scott Cameron "freaked out" on
Angel Dust.
The finale: Eileen Phillips, frus
trated. torn, at wit's end. raids
lockers as the rest of the faculty,
administration, and student body
participate in the festivities of the
Christmas assembly program. As
the choir sings. "Deck the Halls."
she enters the gymnasium pushing
a fiery bier containing all the drugs
confiscated during her raid.
Silence.
Then a tear-jerking speech by
Eileen (and I admit the writer
wiped away a few too), and. one by
one. the students add their contri
butions to the pyre.
Eileen receives a standing ova
tion from administration and stu
dents alike, leaving the viewer to
believe that drugs will never again
be seen at Hamilton High.
This article was not meant to
critique a slightly better-than
mediocre movie. 1 seriously doubt
whether "Desperate Lives" will
walk off with even one Emmy. It
was cast with relatively unknown
actors, and the plot was trite and
overdramatized.
But it should receive acclaim for
vividly portraying a problem that is
affecting more and more young
people each day. Eileen Phillips
pleadingly asks her captive
audience. "Do you know what
you're doing to yourselves?" This is
the key. 1 think the message sought
by playwright Rick Springfield.
-This is the message that must be
spred to every drug user and
potential user in America today,
it's the responsibility of parents, as
well as educators, to instruct, big,
cajole, and. if necessary, punish
their children if they know or
suspect them of using drugs.
It's too late when the situation is
like the Camerons' or Hamilton
High's. 1 am sorry that every
teenager and parent across
America did not watch "Desperate
Lives" so that they might reflect, if
only momentarily, and ask them
selves. "Could that be me?" or
"Could that be my child?"
Ry Cardinal Health Agency Board
Cumberland
Drug Center
After discussion at the March 24
night meeting, the Cardinal Health
Agency Board of Directors recom
mended approval of an application
by Cumberland Chemical Depen
dency Treatment Center for 34
beds which are designated for
inpatient alchohol and substance
abuse treatment. Construction
costs are estimated at S5%.^50 for
the 9450-square-foot facility.
The Cardinal board will forward
its approvals and recommendations
the rest of that day, through the
night and into Sunday afternoon,
getting it secured between 3 p.m.
and 4 p.m. Jones said the extent of
the burn hadn't been measured yet
but he "guessed" it covered about
250 acres.
The others and their burn areas
were about 10 acres near Dun
darrach, two near Addor. and
about five acres near Five Points.
He said no one was injured,
though about 200 people, including
volunteer firemen and non-fire
men, helped fight the fires, but
some outbuildings were burned.
Jones said if it hadn't been for
the rural fire departments, things
would have been "bad." His Hoke
County crew of the Forest Service
consisted of three men but they
were reinforced by out-of-county
State Forest Service men and the
volunteer firemen.
Men fighting the "big" fire in the
Ashley Heights area, he said,
included those from the depart
ments of Crestline in eastern Moore
County on N.C. 211, Pine Hill of
Western Hoke County, McCain
Hospital, West Hoke, and North
Raeford; but there may have been
to the appropriate State and
Federal authorities tor further ac
tion.

Leaves." These compilations have
been published biennally since
1950. Just off the press is the 16th
issue of "Bay Leaves 1980-1981".

will be accompanied by two dollars
for printing and mailing costs.

The dream of every golfer is to
make a hole-in-one. Now when you
make it on the second hold at
Arabia, this is another star in the
crown as far as this golfer is
concerned. Richard Taylor, who
retired several years ago from
Burlington, did this recently. I
don't know who was in the four
some. but I would have liked to
have seen it.
The reason for this is that I have
made more holes-in-one into the
water hole than even hitting the
green. Enough said.

The rain should be a welcome
sight for the forest rangers, since
the fires last weekend.
