At Hoke Missionary Union Banquet
Paroles Official To Speak
The Hoke County Missionary'
Union will sponsor a banquet on
Friday, April 23. at 6 p.m., at
Gibson Cafeteria.
The keynote speaker will be Dr.
J.J. Johnson, North Carolina
paroles commissioner.
Dr. Johnson, a native of Laurel
Hill, is married to the former
Omega Foster, and they have one
daughter Deborah. He has always
been committed to community and
civic affairs. He is the pastor of
First Baptist Church. Fairmont,
and moderator of the St. John's
Association.
Dr. Johnson is past president of
the General Baptist State Con
vention. Some time ago, he denoted
a large tract of land to the General
Baptist State Convention, and this
area now houses .the J.J. Johnson
Assembly site near Laurel Hill.
Many of the General Baptist
Convention activities are held at the
site, including but not limited to
the Missionary Training Con
ference, three week Youth Bible
p
Camp, an annual All Baptist
Picnic, Royal Ambassadors Re
treat. and other Baptist training
sessions.
Prior to being appointed by Gov.
Hunt as parole commissioner. Dr.
Johnson served in the North Caro
lina Legislature, representing the
district of Hoke. Robeson and
Scotland counties. Among his
many achievements, he was in
strumental in getting the "No Lien
Law. and Single Shot Voting" Bills
passed. He was the first black
legislature in eastern North Caro
lina elected since Reconstruction.
In addition to Dr, Johnson,
Mayor John K. McNeill Jr.. and
County Commissioner Neill W.
McPhatter will appear on the
program along with several other
prominent Hoke County citizens.
The banquet is open to the
public, and tickets may be pur
chased from individuals who attend
churches w hich constitute the Hoke
County Union: Buffalo Springs.
