SEED CORN MAGGOT Have you wondered why beans, peas, corn and cucumbers fail to emerge? Or if they do emerge, why seedlings are deformed? Or. why that potato seed piece has tunnels in it? Or why that cabbage plant doesn't grow? Well, the cause could be seed corn maggot. Small brown flies are active during April and can be seen flying over new-tilled soil. They are searching for a place to lay eggs. The white legless maggots feed on germi nating seed, seed pieces or small transplants. Damage is most severe in spring crops in high organic, cool, wet soils. Of course, it helps the maggots if the seed is planted deep. Some things to consider in dealing with seed corn maggots are: 1. Avoid planting early in areas having cold. wet. organic soils. 2. Place seed at proper depth or shallow in well-prepared soils. 3. Use seed treated with an insecticide such as diazinion or methoxychlor. 4. Broadcast the soil insecticide diazinon (Spectracide) in problem areas prior to seeding. 5. Plant a few extra seed and thin where needed. Library Board The Board of Trustees of the Sandhill Regional Library System will hold its quarterly meeting on Wednesday.
