Study Group (Continued from page 1) A public hearing on requests for money for 1982-83 from the county's federal revenue - sharing funds brought three statements. Johnny Melton, commander of the Hoke County Rescue Squad, ex pressed appreciation for the help the county commissioners extended the squad last year and that the amount would like to be granted for the next fiscal year. Anne Pate, director of the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Co mmision, said she hoped the commissioners would carry over to the new year the 520,000 approved last year for the development of the land donated by Burlington In dustries for a public park. Barbara Buie, director of the Hoke Reading/Literacy Council, said that the council would like to have S5.000 for next year ?? but only if it was needed. She said funds from other sources would come, "if we are lucky," and the county money wouldn't be neces sary in that event. The county and city each appreciated S5.000 for the council in anticipation of the cut in federal funds, which subsequently occurred. The commissioners' stand favor ing a Hoke-Scotland County Dis trict of the State House of Repre sentatives was reconfined by a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Neil Mc Phatter voted against it. He said he wanted to see what action officials would take later. He said the action was expected three days after April 19. That was the date the U.S. Justice Department advised the state that the federal attorney general "had interposed an objec tion" to the State Legislature's plan for redisricting for the State House and State Senate. Hoke and Scotland currently are in the district with Robeson County. Officials of local govern ments of Hoke and Scotland have advised the federal officials they want to have a two-county district separate from Robeson to assure a fair representation they have been getting in the three-county district in the State House. Around Town (Continued from page 1) We will write more about this after the date is set. It was good to hear that Craig Phillips, Supt. of Public Instruc tion, was in the county last week. We hope that he was given a good tour of our schools. * ? ? How many of you watched the "Legends of Golf" tournament on TV last weekend.
